Cashrewards $5 Cash Back Rejection - Am I Being Unreasonable?

In late June (2024) I received an email from Cashrewards stating "Get $5 cashback when you spend $20 or more*".

I read the notes at the base of the advert, that were denoted by the "*".

I then activated the offer, and then put a $21 order together via Cashrewards for BigW (whose logo was included in the email along with a list of others).

A few weeks later I got an email stating the $5 bonus had not been paid, and eventually after emails back & forth, I was advised that the purchase did not qualify as Big W have a $50 minimum purchase requirement.

So it appears technically I am not entitled to this, but I feel that the ad was misleading and I have been duped.

Anyone want to weigh in with their opinion to make me feel better or worse?

I am on cash rewards side on this. I got the same offer and was also going to make a big w purchase but read the terms and conditions and realised I wouldn’t be eligible so didn’t go ahead.

IMO this is very bait and switch advertising, pretty much intended to deceive people like the OP to go ahead with the purchase and then cover themselves from liability behind two layers of T&Cs.

bit sneaky - but as loulou1 side above, really gotta read all the finer t and c's with these cashback mobs - was better back in the day when SB and CR had a rep who could investigate. Good luck now I say getting anywhere with either mob these days.

That asterisk in the title means proceed with caution.

At the bottom it says, "excludes items ineligible for cashback or having a 0% cashback rate at time of purchase."

Unfortunately, for Big W orders under $50 track at 0%.

  • Unfortunately the problem is BigW and their rule

With all the emails back and forth, is the $5 still worth it?

    • that's what I hate about cashback
even with $100 cashback they make you work for it if it's initially rejected

Yes, you have been duped. And no, you can't do anything about it except not to use cashrewards anymore.

  • BigW and other similar stores have got a lot of rules for cashback. You have to read all of the "fine print". I don't think it's sneaky at all, as honestly, the $50 min spend required is pretty prominent.
