ABN Risking Being Cancelled by ATO

I applied for an ABN last year as a sole tradie just for shopping because some websites require an ABN for registration. I never run a business as a tradie. Recently, I received an email from ATO, indicating it would cancel the ABN because I didn't include any information as a tradie in the tax return and they were wondering if I was still running the business.
My income as a tradie is 0 and I forgot about it when lodging the tax return. I just wonder what you do in this case as many members on the websites also have an ABN but don't run a business.

Invoice the wife for unblocking the toilet, $450 weekend call out fee and $50 for services rendered.

Is that the Sunday rate? Pretty good if it is.

im going to need you to round down to $420 or up to $694.20.

But who cleans up the mess? Only a brave husband would leave that for the wife to clean up.

            @MS Paint: *wife

*husband cleaning up the mess after contractor finishes

            *ripped, tanned 6ft6 contractor

hang on i think i've heard about this one before somewhere

That's what led to the mess that Muzeeb is referring to…

Be careful there. It might get classified as taxable business income and ATO would want you to pay tax on that.

      • I am honoured to have been bestowed with a reply by the legend himself.

Thanks for adding a disclaimer, although fairly obviously a joke, I forgot to add * this is not financial advice.

Yep. No need to be a tradie actually.
      No need for anything really
I got one just by applying.
      many friends did too
      Too easy

so what do you do every year for your tax return when it asks you are you a sole trader?

  • +3

as many members on the websites also have an ABN but don't run a business.

They'd be open to random abn entitlement reviews anyway, especially if

there are indicators on your tax return, other lodgments, or other third-party information that indicate you are no longer operating a business

    • Thanks for sharing this information. I am just not that lucky.

  • I've had that before and just had to email somewhere to ask not keep it open

    • I kind of want to keep it. lol

        Apologies, i mistyped.

I've had that before and just had to email somewhere to ask not close it.

if they cancel it and you re-apply that actually puts you up further in chance to get assessed again

from above link that I put up

you’ve reapplied for an ABN after we've refused or cancelled it.

I suppose it depends how much you're benefitting from access to businesses that require you to have ABN to trade with them.
The link lists a bunch of activities they count as you looking to have attempted to start a business.
Could still be grounds to cancel anyway.

You are only supposed to have an ABN if you are conducting a business. If you have 0 income against your ABN it is a big indication you are NOT conducting business. If you want to keep it you should start conducting a business.

they cancelled mine and a few month later i reactivated by applying again - took about 5 mins

    • This

Don’t stress op. Reactivate when you start trading again

  • register a business name for your sole trader business. about $100 every 3 years. register a domain. make a basic 1 page website

  • I got the same this morning, read the last few lines OP:

If you’ve stopped running your business, you don't need to do anything. We’ll cancel your ABN.
If you start running your business again, it's easy to apply for an ABN online at abr.gov.au In most cases if your business structure hasn't changed, we’ll register you with the same ABN.

I am just going to let it cancel.

    Just call…they'll keep it active.
    No convoluted explanation required.

  • Do a few menulog deliveries, or some mystery shopping. ;)

  • I think you need an ABN if you take scrap metal to dealers after so many Kg. If you're not using it, just tell them that's the reason and they might let it go.

  • Just do BewareOfTHe Dog suggested if wants to get some activities going, even drive with Amazon Flex is okay. I believe parcel delivery such as Amazon Flex does not require GST registration as long your income from business does not exceed GST threshold, check ATO website to confirm.
