  • Spring loaded coffee tamper haha, I didn't know this was a thing. What next?

    • These have been around for years… Check out the kind of espresso you're able to achieve with manual espresso machines like the flair pro.

How does this differ to the MiiCoffee Tamper 58.5mm$44.99?

    • I would say both a similar. Doubt there are any differences. But for me the Matow aesthetically is better.

    • They look different?

    • +4

      They are different.
If you see a spring loaded tamp with depth adjustment, it's not force-calibrated like the double spring setup.

Check out the MHW-3bomber stuff on AliEx. Great quality for the price.
      Spring Loaded Tamp

      • I bought two of yours. I hope you right brosef

    • +1

Can't see too much details but the design looks similar. I suspect it is also 2 springs.
If it does they might be similar

Here is a video of the concept

I just read in the description that it's adjustable by measurement.. as such as rainbow unicorn suggested.. your linked version isn't force regulated. Consistency therefore is less persistent/repeatable based on volume in portafilter.

  • How does this compare to Normcore V4?

  • Has anyone actually bought this tamper and could provide some reviews? It has been ages since I researched these things and there seems to be a lot more knock offs of the Espros. For context, I have an Eazytamp which has served me for 7+ years (used with a BES920), but mine doesn't have a leveling edge, which is tempting. I see good things about the Normcore V4.

    • +1

I've got the MHW-3bomber, very good quality for the price.

      • Does it work with BES920?

        • No reason why not if it's the right size (58mm)

    • I have this exact one and works well with the BES920. Combined with this WDT Tool make it a lot easier to get good results for an amateur like me.

    • I think the levelling edge is quite useful, IMHO much more important than calibrated force.

  • Honestly is this worth it after using the Breville dual boiler with stock tamper for 10 years? I do love storing it in the machine so never looked at aftermarket.

    • +1

it's probably worth it, not for improving coffee quality, but for the satisfaction of the person tamping the coffee.

I won't buy it anyway, nor should any real ozbargainer XD

If you just drink milk coffee and/or are not too discerning with fancy coffee - it may not be worth the investment for you. If you’ve been satisfied with your setup for ten years, if it ain’t broke - why fix it?
If you are looking at the next step on your “coffee journey”, getting a flat base tamper (cf the Breville has rounded edges) that goes right to the edge of your basket is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to get instantly better results in your cup.

this article is a bit jargony but if you just jump to the diagrams, it shows how great an effect it can have on upgrading to a flat edge to edge tamper compared to the rounded edges one. But to repeat the above, if you won’t notice the difference in the cup, and like the convenience of storing the original tamp in the machine, don’t waste your money.

Looks like a good design, only question is how well it's made.

The MHW branded one from Aliexpress has been my favourite calibrated tamper. Very well made and super smooth action where the Normcore was very rough. It also clicks when you reach 30lbs pressure, making it the easiest (imo) to be consistent with.

  • Side Question - Anyone have the BDB and purchased an aftermarket reasonably priced basket and portafilter? Wife always beats me to the Breville in the morning and habitually leaves the puck in the filter and doesn't clean it. I'm sick of having to empty/wash/dry it :)

    • +1

So your solution will be to grind into a new portafilter? And just leave the one she has used, out, spent, and uncleaned…?

I don’t think getting a new portafilter is going to be the answer. This may cause more issues than it solves. Have a chat with your wife, or accept this is one of the things you will have to live with, and just clean it.

      • +1

I use a separate portafilter. No amount of reasoning worked and honestly, more "reasoning" only created more problems…

    • I have the same problem. Portafilter full, burnt milk caked on wand, Water tank empty etc.

Get a bottomless PF. Much easier to clean though make sure you get one with the correct lugs for the BDB. It's different to other machines.

    • Have you tried ordering a new wife?

      • Would be cheaper than all these coffee accessories.

  • do these click when the pressure is reached?

  • I have the Normcore V4, it is supposed to release the tamper after desired tamp and pressure but it does not, so basically all its doing is distance tamping, spring does nothing, you can put the hardest spring and do a bit of workout lol

The only great this is that 58.5mm tamper gives you a clean looking puck. The stock tamper with BDB doesn't do that, it leave coffee on the sides of the basket

  • +1

The ripples design is actually worse than the flat bed design.. I have the normcore of both flat and ripple. I had a lot more channeling in the ripple tamp

  • Yeah I would use a spinning distributor with this to have consistent shots pulled, grab yourself a naked porta filter also, and set of scales to weigh the grind for each shot if it's available, for all those who want next level, and a timer to measure the shot length also if that's available try for about 28 - 30 seconds but also depends on the bean xx

    • Any recommended naked portafilter?

      • no sorry, I've never purchased one, just used the ones from in-house at places Ive worked, and even then I can't remember the brands. I suppose in that respect, what you pay for is what you get maybe, and I suggest any online reviews/forums

  • Any suggestions for flat vs ripple base for bambino users? Thinking of grabbing the flat 53.3mm, but unfortunately that only comes in an alu handle version.

Also, anyone know if the 53.3mm tamp will play nicely with the stock brevillle double-shot basket, or will the basket curvature get in the way?
