Are Lexmark Printers a Waste of Money

Hi, I would advise any Ozbargain person looking for a printer to stay away from Lexmark unless you want to be trapped into buying VERY expensive genuine toners.
As you can see from the centrecom Link I have provided, if you cut and paste this printer into Ebay, you will see the toners ranging from $188 - $307 per hi yield colour toner. OMG!
My non genuine mfc-l3750cdw Brother toners are about $57.50 for the whole set of 4! ($14.37 each) They are fantastic.
I'm not sure why there isn't any non Genuine Toners for most of Lexmark printers, but when I hear a family member or friend said they bought one, I just face palm my head and say don't come crying to me when your toner runs out.

Also my Inkjet theory is Never buy a "cheap" printer of any brand that has a 3 in 1 colour cartridge. Most of the time the you cant buy non genuine, so you will be paying about $50 for the colour where as NON genuine single colour cartridge's can be bought for about $2 each when buying a few sets at a time on Ebay.
Just pretend you at BigW and they have printers for $40 …. wow lets get one.. sorry $90 to replace the colour and black after a few hundred pages of light text.

I might be completely wrong about this but the target market of Lexmark in my mind are businesses and although normal consumers do buy their products it is mostly businesses. I’d bet that it isn’t worth it for that much 3rd party ink to be out there because usually businesses have some sort of support plan with the printer company that includes ink.

Lexmark used to be IBM’s printing business, before they sold them off like they sold off Thinkpads.
They were primarily small/medium office printers, but they also sold extremely cheap home printers for a while, and added microchip controls to print cartridges to discourage generics.
I haven’t seen one for over 10 years, but there is no reason to use them with cheap Brother printers, and Epson eco tank options.

TIL that Lexmark still sells printers.

Haven't seen one since the early 2000s.

      • My boss had one and disposed of it. As i discovered there were no 3rd party toners. Hence the he got rid of it.

Took you 10 years of being on ozbargain to discover printers are expensive?

You've seen the price of Brother lasers, right? The toner cost per page is less than a sheet of disposable paper hand towel.

EcoTank printers are in the same ballpark.

  • I do all my printing and photocopying at work for this reason.

  • I used to use liquid ink printers until it got too messy and unreliable (refills and dried out heads) and moved to mono lasers ages ago.
I only upgraded to colour lasers in recent times.
I do understand that liquid ink printers get better results in certain situations.
