How to Escalate if eBay Seller Isn't Honouring Warranty? eBay Is Refusing to Help

Hi,

About a year ago I purchased a Dyson compatible battery from an eBay seller and the listing stated 5 years warranty. The battery recently stopped working and I tried to reach out to the seller to make a warranty claim, but they are flat out ignoring me after I sent them messages every week for about a month. I also reached out to eBay and after jumping through hoops to find a way to contact them (Facebook is the answer) - they are refusing to take responsibility and telling me to talk to the seller. Absolutely hopeless.

It seems I've been scammed by dishonest advertising on eBay, eBay is refusing to take any accountability, I don't have an ABN I can reference to report to the ACCC, and its been too long to make a credit card dispute - is there anything else I can do?

At this rate it seems eBay is just becoming a scam marketplace with 0 customer support, be weary.

What do you mean "at this rate"?

It's been this way for a decade or more.

    • I always try to purchase through PayPal , they have helped me get my money back before , I thought they’d at least put you on to Dyson !

      • +3

I'd be surprised if PayPal cared a year after the transaction. Maybe they will.

But OP was naive to believe a 5 year warranty claim on a budget lithium battery pack (who does that outside EV makers who are incredibly careful with battery management).

If something sounds too good to be true…

I thought they’d at least put you on to Dyson !

Why would Dyson help with a fake battery?

        • Your assumption may be incorrect , or is every pagan onboard with ithe battery being fake ?

          • +1

@Murkymerv: Maybe they have better glasses than you.

OP says on line one of the post.

            Dyson compatible battery

@RockyRaccoon: Yes I do have trouble reading, thanks for highlighting that . But I also said if it was fake , assumptions !

    • Kogan is much worse.
At least in most cases ebay steps in to resolve or refund.
Kogan takes no responsibility whatsoever from day 1

  • Seller or store? Probably seller. Same “warranty” as buying from Facebook marketplace and aliexpress.

Buy a new one and return the old one is what someone else said before.

How much is the battery? If it's around $30, just buy a new one and move on.

For the OP who believed 5 yr ebay warranty for a fake battery. Seller trolled him who deserves in this case!

  • +3

Unless you're buying from a reputable shop on eBay, it may not be right, but don't expect warranty. You got a year's worth of use, so you're pretty lucky already, I'd say.

    • +3

I would never expect a 5 year warranty on a battery, from a shitty marketplace like Ebay, to be serious in the first place.

Batteries are a perfect example of where people buy often by cheap garbage without any way to verify quality.

Want high quality batteries? Get them from Dyson, or source your own 18650 cells and rebuild your own pack with Japanese or Korean cells. Any ebay-sourced battery pack is probably using bottom of the barrel cells from some low cost factory in China, with false mAh ratings on them.

I used to build battery packs for a hobby. My Japanese or Nitecore cells would last for years. The cheap Chinese cells would die within 12-18 months of gentle use and careful storage.

Battery is likely a fake so just move on.

  • +3

That's why I pretty much gave up on buying from eBay. The sellers just flat out ignore you… and the eBay live chat says that they'll "report" the buyer and that's about all that happens.

  • Usually battery isnt covered by warranty. Imagine some people turn something on 24/7 ofcourse battery will die faster.

    eBay Is Refusing to Help

    Why would eBay help?

  • I feel for you. It's unpleasant to not get something you thought you were rightly entitled to.

Bottom line is as others have said. It would be pretty tough to get any company to warrant a battery for that long. Sometimes you win online sometimes you lose. Dispose of the dead battery at Woolworths free battery drop off and buy another one?

We are all becoming slaves to batteries, charging everything we use with cords and plug packs everywhere. Seems pretty wasteful for the convenience it's supposed to give us.

People actually believe there’s warranty on eBay & Aliexpress purchase?

    • +1

If you buy from proper local businesses in eBay - there will be warranty and ACL.

    • -2

Well why else would they be advertising it? Is there no accountability? We've basically got a scam platform (i.e. eBay) operating with no guarantees or support within Australia where we have strict consumer rights thanks to ACCC

      • +1

We've basically got a scam platform (i.e. eBay)

I think that maybe you're finally getting the idea.

        • What's the idea? And why the need for the condescending tone, I'm simply asking a question and everyone is trying to be a smartarse in the comments

          • @Johnsmithaus:

            What's the idea?

The idea is that eBay is a scam platform. Not all the time (only in Oz have I seen big retailers jump onto it as a sales channel), but a lot of the time.

I knew buying it that the product is not a real Dyson battery, and it was not sold as such. It was sold as a generic no-name battery with a 5 year guarantee. My strife isn't with the battery itself, but with the 5 year guarantee that was falsely advertised

The reason for all the sarcasm on this thread is you bought "a generic no-name battery with a 5 year guarantee" from a seller that had no business registration information, no evidence of it operating as a business in Australia, from a marketplace widely known for fly-by-night dropshippers.

Most people who do this know they are taking a huge risk on customer service and support, they would not believe claims of a five year warranty any more than an unregistered used car salesman claiming that a car had only been owned by a careful elderly lady driver.

Why do you think that a Dyson battery costs double or more of whatever you paid? It's because they're a proper business, with proper customer support and warranties. And some measure of QC in their supply chain that ensures that their cells are properly sourced. You pay less than half the price from some rando marketplace seller, you roll your dice and take your chances- why did you think otherwise?

This is a cheap lesson in learning to be a little more questioning of online advertising claims.

          • @Johnsmithaus: When you look at this ad do you genuinely believe this screen protector would hold up against Thor’s hammer as well?
Ebay, Amazon, Ali and Facebook are just market places. Buy the sellers, not the products. And have the right expectations as well. Most people would know better than to believe any sort of long term warranty from third party sellers outside of the standard 30 days and whatever Paypal may provide.

About a year ago I purchased a Dyson compatible battery

I'm guessing this cost you about $40.

    Just move on.

Honestly, the time and energy you spent so far is more than this. You took a risk with a non OEM battery and you KNEW you were taking that risk, and it hasn't panned out.

  • Can you buy another off them and return the (profanity) one?

    • +1

Bonus of this approach is that he gets a combined 10 years of warranty.

  • +1

You bought a counterfeit product and are expecting a 5 year warranty to be honored? Just hope it hasn’t damaged your machine and move on.

What are you expecting eBay to do? If you bought it on marketplace, would you be expecting Zuckerberg to source you a new one? At best they would shut the seller down, only to open up under a new name.

How much did you save by buying the counterfeit product?

    • Just hope it hasn’t damaged your machine and move on.

These Dyson packs are just six or so 18650 cells wired together, either half in parallel then series or all in series (I have no idea what voltage the packs are configured to) driving a DC motor.

Just how is this going to have mysteriously 'damage the machine? Worst they might have done is one of the cells has started leaking which hamages the lack, but not the vacuum.

These are not even LiPos, so they're not prone to fire risk.

Sure, OP should not expect a warranty. Or even expect the pack to have the claimed capacity. But let's be sensible about it- packs based on old boring cylindrical cells are not going to magically damage a simple DC motor.

      • Thermal runaway.

        • Thermal runaway.

If thermal runaway was a problem (highly unlikely with lithium ions, maybe you are confusing this with lithium polymer) then the damage would be visible as the pack burns up.

Just hope it hasn’t damaged your machine and move on.

In the absence of a melted vacuum cleaner, there is no mystery invisible damage to the DC motor. The pack doesn't magically send too much voltage through the machine.

I'm guessing you've never actually looked into battery chemistries or building packs and are simply tossing out random terms from the internet.

          • @rumblytangara: Of course I have. And they would all be concerns of mine when buying low quality batteries.

    • I knew buying it that the product is not a real Dyson battery, and it was not sold as such. It was sold as a generic no-name battery with a 5 year guarantee. My strife isn't with the battery itself, but with the 5 year guarantee that was falsely advertised

  • Dyson’s own battery’s don’t have a 5 year warranty. None of my genuine Dyson batteries have lasted that long, so there’s no way a crappy after market battery would. While I get your point, t think you really are wasting your energy on this.

  • Unfortunately in my experience this seems to be commonplace.

Whenever I see a place that is advertising replaceable car parts with 5 year warranty I know it's absolute trash and would avoid that seller like the plague.

When premium brands like TRW and Koyo, or even genuine themselves, only offer 2 years max, I know the guys selling cheap generic branded stuff with 5 years warranty can do it by just completely ignoring your claims.
