Powershop Energy Packs - How Does It Work?

Hi there, I'm using Powershop (NSW) and they're selling Top Up Packs and Future Packs which seem to me too good to be true. I wonder what the catch is?

For example, they are selling Spring Ahead Future Pack, which I can spend $75 for $100 worth. The pack rate is higher than my normal rate but for $25 extra it's worth it (I guess).

I wonder how does the pack rate work? Let say I use $150 worth of energy in September. The first $100 from the pack will use the pack rate and the rest will use my normal rate? Or the whole billing period will use pack rate?

I don't see the benefits of the provider if it's the former case other than they get the money earlier.

Thanks

  • 75$ for 100$worth. The pack rate is higher than my normal rate but for 25$

    Sorry, but I don't know what 75$, 100$ and 25$ are.

    • Well it's hard to explain if you are not a Powershop user. Basically they are selling 100$ worth of energy credit for 75$ (25$ bonus). But there are rates associated with the pack which is confusing (e.g. your normal rate is 32.26c per kWh but with the pack, the rate is 24.20). Hope it make clearer.

      • I think curlcurl wants the dollar sign at the front

The Top Up packs look useless. It's at the normal rate ie $10 buys $10 worth of electricity.

The GreenPower Pack you pay extra for the government GreenPower fund in addition to Powershop being carbon neutral.

The Future Packs you pay early at a discount on a set amount only. It puts the money on your account until that month. They subtract it from the bill then.

For us it's $37 worth of power for $30, so basically a flat $7 off a month. Looks like for you it's $75 for $100, so a flat $25 saved which is worth it for a few seconds work.

You only get one a month.

You must use a lot more power for the bigger discount or maybe be in a different place.

If you leave them beforehand, they have to refund the pre-payment.

  • Still confused how pack rate works. August pack is no bainer as pack rate is lower than my normal rate. Just curious, Im buying all of them anyway 😜

    • Basically if you pay $75 now on the Future Pack, you will get $100 taken off your bill for that month when you pay it. You end up $25 ahead.

It's less complicated than with Powershop some time ago! They had a complicated system that to get the best price you had to engage and pay.

But now it's just a bonus feature they have if you want. I guess to keep you engaged. It will add up at $25 per month.

      • Future Packs should always be cheaper.

        That's the point.

New ones for more future months will come along later.
