[eBook] Language Learning and Travel Guides Bundle 60 Items US$18 (~A$27) @ Humble Bundle

50

Decent travel software bundle with a tonne of lonely planet travel guidebooks, and language lessons from uTalk. It looks like all the uTalk lessons expire after 12 months… unsure when the 12 months start or if each language module can be activated individually (will update this post when I get a response from Humble). However, the bundle is already pretty good value if you're after lonely planet guidebooks alone.

The Summer Games: Language Learning and Travel bundle is your passport to exploring the world like a champion! You’ll get over 30 Lonely Planet guidebooks full of maps, travel tips, and itineraries for some of the most memorable destinations around the world, including France, Japan, Italy, and many others. Also included is a vast selection of language lessons via the popular uTalk app, designed by scientists, researchers and linguists to make the process of language acquisition fun and effective. Get ready for your travels with 12 months of access to Japanese, French, and a host of other languages via the uTalk app! Plus, your purchase helps the Children’s Miracle Network.

In past bundles the languages activated all at once.

    • Cheers for advising. I was afraid of that. Who learns a dozen plus languages in the same year?

Hopefully, they've decided to not be lazy and individualise the activation.

      • It's not great but I think for most they are pretty much just an added bonus. 1 year is a long time in some ways but when it comes to learning a language it's not very long at all. If they let you activate them one at a time (and there was no time limit) you could be using these well into the next decade.

        • Yeah, added bonus is the way I'm looking at it.

I can see your point that the uTalk modules could be used into the next decade, though, most people would likely try to learn a language in the lead up to when they visit that country. I don't see myself learning more than one language in a 12 month window which effectively makes this a lonely planet ebooks deal more than anything.

          • @Mugsy: They pretty much put these deals out every year. What you get for the price is unreal. The only reason I don't get them is because we don't travel. As soon as we start travelling I'd pick these up. I'd probably even get them every time there were updates to the countries/cities I'm interested in. I'd treat it like a yearly subscription to Lonely Planet. Honestly when you are talking about travelling $26 is nothing. I am a HumbleBundle fanboy though so that is also a factor.

            • @ozbs25: I haven't traveled internationally in a very long time… hoping to start up again but there's crap associated with my house build that keeps getting in the way.

I'll probably end up buying this pack… the assortment of lonely planet books is quite diverse and gives me something to read for ideas for travel after the Japan trip I'm hoping to do next year.

And knowing me, I'll probably be too busy/lazy to learn a language when there's Microsoft Translator/Google Translate/Samsung Interpreter on my phone.

FYI many of the guides were published in 2024 so definitely a good purchase for me as I’ll be traveling across a few countries over the next 12 months. Thanks op!

    • Almost certain Portugal's one isn't though. I think I have this exact same edition packed somewhere to funnily, take to Portugal.. 😅 Unless they're using the same covers, this one has to be a decade old, give or take a couple years..

You can just look up the version number. Bit of a pain but if there a countries or cities you are interested in you can just look it up that way.

  • Are the uTalk resources any good? The Lonely Planet guides are cool, but if they would genuinely help me to learn languages, this becomes a no brainer to me.

    • From someone who's tried for over a decade to find the best solution to learn "traditional" Portuguese rather than the ever increasing takeover of Brazillian Portuguese, I am thoroughly surpised they have courses labelled "European" Portuguese and ofcourse Brazillian Portuguese.

Just for this fact alone I have to try it out.

okay, you've sold it to me too. $26 is $26, which seems like a decent price to be fair.

In fairness, in Australia atleast, $26 would barely get you an hour lesson with a native language speaker (any language) where you'd be lucky to remember 26 words/phrases in that time.. 😅

Just unlocked my memory of collecting all the Lonely Planet "Passport to…" PSP "games" in the day.

    • I remember that too.

  • I got the last bundle they had like this and I have to say uTalk is not impressive at all. I downloaded it, tried it for a bit, deleted it and then was thankful that at least the bundle had the Lonely Planet books.

You're better off getting a Mango Languages account through your local library if available.
