Samsung Galaxy A55 or Poco X6 Pro

Hello fellow OzBargainers, I am in the market for a new phone.

I am currently rocking the Poco X3 Pro for the past few years. It is by far my most favourite phone I've ever used, especially when considering the price I paid for it ~$300. Not too long ago, I received the text message from Optus that my device will be impacted by 3G shutdown. I've narrowed my search for a phone to the Samsung Galaxy A55, and the Poco X6 Pro.

Things that are important to me:

  • Processing speed
  • Battery life
  • Decent screen

I don't do any gaming, and I am not fussed on having a fancy camera.

I am leaning towards the A55 due to the reported updates releases till 2029, and I like the fact that I can insert an SD Card into the A55. So if I was going to get the Poco, I would prefer the 256GB version. On that note, is it important to get the 8GB or 12GB ram??

Should I decide to go with the A55, is the price likely to drop before now and September? If not, I'd rather get it sooner than later.

Happy to hear of other suggestions also - but I don't like Motorola's.

Thank you.

I would love to know if this is just a ploy to make people but new phones. The X3 has 4G band 28 capability, so why won't it work without 3G?

You might be able to enable VoLTE & VoWiFi on your current phone: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15444862/redir

    • Interesting. I followed those instructions and now have a VoLTE icon in the status bar next to my 4G symbol. Does this mean that once the 3G shutdown occurs, I can still make calls only when in my home and connected to WiFi? What about when out of the house/roaming?

VoLTE is over the 4G/5G mobile network so it will work when out and about.

VoWiFi is over your home WiFi.

Even with VoLTE active, like me, you may still receive messages from Optus saying your device will not work. They aren't actually checking for VoLTE activity, it's just a check as to whether your device model is on one of their lists or not.

        • There does not seem to be a VoWiFi setting on my Poco X3 Pro. Can only find the VoLTE setting.

@chugsta: VoLTE is the important one.

VoWiFi is just handy to add additional "coverage" when you might otherwise have none.

  • I'm in a similar boat, perfectly happy with my 5yo Australian stock Xiaomi Mi9T but the "your phone wont work messages" are giving me the shits (even though I expect it will work perfectly fine, VoLTE is functional at the moment and it didn't switch to 3G when I prank dialled Emergency and then immediately hung up before it connected, maybe that's not the best test, but what else can you do?).
I'm pretty much set on Pixel 8, hoping to see prices take a further dip with the forthcoming Pixel 9 announcement in mid-August.

I'm definitely steering clear of any import as there are zero guarantees that our carriers wont just disconnect anything that isn't on their Whitelists.

    • I always worried about this. Is there such thing as Australian stock Poco X6 Pro, or are they all imports?

      • This scenario is a shitfest, poorly managed from the very start and as such, I have no confidence that my device is actually incompatible.
        According to your links, my Mi 9T meets all the "criteria";
        - released in mid-2019 (not before 2019)
        - purchased in Australia from a Brick and Mortar store (JB HiFi)
        - VoLTE capable and active

Despite this, I'm getting infernal messages from Optus that it's not compatible with no way for me to go "yeah, I get it, don't bother me again" and no way for me to test the only possible reason they might be legitimately notifying me, Emergency Calls…

Our pissweak government (I care not for any of our political parties) has not set any requirement that carriers try to minimise turnover of perfectly compatible devices, and the carriers have every incentive to just sell you a new handset, so they've put in the barest minimum effort to "inform" consumers of the changes whilst looking forward to a nice windfall in additional sales this year.

        • AMTA administers a database, compiled and audited by each of the Australian Mobile Network Operators

EDIT: yeah okay it is terrible, I entered my S7 which is 4G and has VoLTE but I get "CHECK. Please contact your service provider or handset vendor, as your device may not be fully supported when 3G closes."

          • @CodeXD: Yup… the keywords there are;
"compiled and audited by each of the Australian Mobile Network Operators"

            • @ESEMCE: So are we screwed? I don't really want to wait and see if my phone stops working, and then have to wait for new device to arrive. I also suspect that prices won't drop from now till end of August, as retailers will be aware of the impending shutdown.

              • @chugsta: Who knows?
I expect that phones that support VoLTE (like ours) will continue to work just fine after the shutdown and won't be booted from the network.
(With the possibility that Emergency Calls may not work)
I expect this to be the case as carriers will want to be able to sell roaming plans to travellers whose phones may not have the appropriate settings for Emergency Calls, but will otherwise work fine.

                • @ESEMCE: I might just bite the bullet and update the phone. Am leaning towards the A55. The kids can use my poco to muck around on at home. Thanks for all your assistance.
