Realme Phone. No Voice Call

Last week 2 of my nephew arrived in Australia. Both of them using Realme phone. (Realme X & realme 8)
I bought them Lebara prepaid sim. But they are having some issues. They can use mobile data and receive sms but can not make voice calls. I have not used any android for a while and really do not know much about their settings. Cant find any video on Youtube too.. If anyone knows any tricks or about the issuse. Please enlighten me.

***Similar thing happened to a friend, but he had iphone he switched off the VoLTE and it worked for him. But in Realme, network selection is ONLY automatic.

Welcome to the GSM LSM (local system for mobile communication) VoLTE world.

In accordance with the Standard Form of Agreement, unless otherwise agreed with Lebara in writing, a Lebara SIM and/or eSIM can only be used with Approved Devices as specified by Lebara.

A Lebara SIM and/or eSIM that is used in non-approved devices may be suspended by Lebara, unless Lebara has otherwise given approval in writing. Lebara may also block any such device from being used on the Vodafone network. My parents came to Australia and my father is using real me phone and can’t make calls and Lebara support was of no use and advised me to buy a local phone.
My mum uses Mi phone and was having the same issue with Lebara but found a code on whirlpool to run on keypad which fixed the issue on Mi phone but no luck on my dad’s real me phone

  • On Optus network carriers such as Catch Connect they do not have a whitelist(Approved Devices list) for VoLTE devices, so any device with VoLTE enabled can make phone calls.

    Not sure about other networks.

    • First still check if your Realme phone has VoLTE enabled.

  • You might need to enable developer options to access VoLTE options?

  • I bought a grey market OnePlus 5G phone from Kogan a while back. I wanted to connect on the Telstra network because I couldn't get 5G reception in my home from either of the other two carriers. But it wouldn't work on the Telstra network. Telstra support ran me round in circles with the everyone blaming everyone else, and telling me to go back to them to get it sorted. I eventually concluded that because it was a grey import it wasn't white listed, and was being blocked by the network, and settled on 4G from Optus. Kogan offered me $30 compensation.

Then a while later when I decided I really did want 5G, and bought an Oppo 5G phone locally, and got a SIM from a company that used the Telstra network, I found that SIM worked in the OnePlus. Something had happened, either a software update in the OnePlus, or Telstra adding OnePlus to white list, and I'd just wasted $400 on a second 5G phone when the one I had now worked on the Telstra network.

What made it all the more stupid is that OnePlus is a subsidiary of Oppo, both get built in the same plant, and the two phone are basically the same under the skin.

If I'm not mistaken, Lebara uses the Vodafone network, which has already switched off 3G service and therefore will require handsets with VoLTE capability AND the correct VoLTE settings for the carrier (which are installed in non-user accessible locations on the device. This is the massive stumbling block introduced with the move to VoLTE insinuated in the first reply to this thread).
My guess is that the Realme devices are indeed VoLTE capable, but do not have the appropriate carrier settings installed. Unfortunately there is no way to rectify this…

Both Optus and Telstra networks have 3G still active, so calls will still work over 3G with those networks, and Optus seem to have the most globally compatible VoLTE settings, so VoLTE might even work fine on Realme devices.

As others have mentioned, grab SIMs for either Optus or Telstra services (or one of their resellers).

  • Thanks everyone for your reply.

After reading your post, and remembering something related that I saw on the Whirlpool forums recently (https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/3n1jvn1x - from the bottom of page 4 onwards will suffice), I activated a spare Lebara SIM today and have been playing with it in my (spare) Realme C21 (RMX3201). With every other SIM that I've tried in the C21 (eg; Telstra, Boost, Optus, Amaysim, Vodafone and probably others), VoLTE (and VoWiFi) just works by default. But as lots of others have found, there seems to be something different about Lebara when used in some handset types.

As per that Whirlpool thread, I downloaded and installed both Shizuku and Pixel IMS on my C21 and followed the accompanying instructions. Like user "Finite State Machine", I now have VoLTE (and VoWiFi) working with a Lebara SIM, but like they also found, the changes aren't sticky and need to be reapplied each time the phone is rebooted. Might be worth a shot if you have the time and inclination.
