Games on Switch or PS5 When Short on Time to Play

I am 42, busy life with work, family, friends and side hustles.

Speaking about game selection, I started Zelda: TOTK but to get from place A to B takes ages, plus I might get killed in between due to the decayed weapons I am given. I don't have time for that.

I like fighting games like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat or Brawlhalla that I can have a couple of matches in 10 mins.

Mario Kart is a great game to play when time is short as well.

FPS games give me motion sickness ๐Ÿ˜ช.

What games would you recommend when time is short and still want to sneak in a gaming session?

Thanks.

  • I'm in a similar situation. I've recently discovered Tetris Effect. The aspect of the game that I find enjoyable is the multiplayer and battle modes.

No 'grinding' as such and it's not a game that you forget the moves on as result of extended breaks.

    • I have heard good things about this tetris. Will try it out. Thank you.

  • Worth pointing out that ps5 (at least) allows you to hibernate and resume in the middle of a game. Only takes a few seconds. So nothing to stop you doing that whenever you have a moment.

    • Good point, thank you

    • That's the same with Switch. Quick press on the power button and it goes on standby and you can continue where you left off

  • Steamworld Dig
    Super Smash Bros

    • I am terrible at super smash ๐Ÿคฃ. Will check out Steamworld Dig.
      Thanks

why not just play mobile games then

    • Would you have any suggestions on mobile that fit the criteria?

    • Clash of clans you can see your base progress. Great socials and banter from the older age group as well.

If you're a puzzle-enjoyer; There is over a dozen different Picross games on Switch, all of which make for fantastic time wasters (puzzles can be paused and resumed at will, no larger challenges outside of just completing the puzzles with or without hints)

I've clocked maybe about 600 total hours on my Switch Lite just on the official Picross games ๐Ÿ‘

    • I've never heard of this game. Will check it out.

  • got a PC or laptop? even low-end will do. Lookup Fightcade

basically its a platform for playing old arcade games online with others. All the street fighter classics are on their as well as wel as other popular stuff. might take a bit to setup initially but smooth sailing once done.

I play Super Street Fighter II X on there every now and then, but the alpha games, mortal kombats, and the like are all on there.

grab yourself a wireless 8bitdo arcade stick and jump in and out as you please

    • op asking for game suggestion for switch and ps5, not other platforms. I read it wrong at first too.

  • Overwatch. It's free, you got nothing to lose by trying it out. Mario Kart on your Switch can be done in short bursts too.

    • I've also heard good things about overwatch, I'llcheck it out. Thanks.

  • Rocket League is quick and enjoyable, don't know how the motion sickness will go though

  • Helldivers 2 on PS5 is fun for 40(ish) minute games. The game is very fun, isn't pay to win and is cheaper than most AAA games to purchase.

    • 40 mins runs are almost above the limit time I have on one go. I've heard it is a great fun co-op game. I might check it out. Thanks.

Balatro is my new addiction. I didn't think I'd like it as much as I do, but damn is it fun. Easy to pick up and put down, and it's available on both PS5 and Switch. There's also Slay The Spire if you find you're into these types of games.

I came here to mention exactly those 2 games. You can play a single run on either of them very quickly (especially Balatro), but there's enough going on in both of them that you can keep playing them for months / years.

    • Oh yes, Balatro, "overwhelmingly positive reviews" ๐Ÿ˜….

Cobalt Core is a hybrid of FTL and Slay the Spire (turn based roguelite deck builder space combat) that ticks the boxes on Switch as well, highly recommend

That looks awesome! Definitely going to grab it, just as soon as I finish one more game of Balatro! ๐Ÿ˜›

        • By freak coincidence it's 25% off right now (according to DekuDeals) at the low price of $21 so not a bad time to be interested in the game :)

    Switch

Celeste (2D platformer that are broken into stages)
Baba is you (puzzle game sort of the type you either be able to solve or let the puzzle simmer while you do family duties)
    Shovel Knight (2D platformer)
Yoku Island Express (pin ball metroidvania)
Sayonara Wild Hearts (unique rail shooter to some banger music. Split into stages each lasting 3-6 minutes with the exception of the last one)

NSO subscription games - pretty cheap if you join family, access to NES, SNES, GB and if you have expansion GBA and GC. Gameboy and GBA are my most utilised and you can rewind and create save states.

None of the above requires much time commitment and no need to relearn much if you have taken a hiatus from them

    • I have Shovel Knight in my backlog catalogue already ๐Ÿ˜‰. I've never heard of Sayonara Wild Hearts, I'll check it out. Thanks.

  • PS5 - Call of Duty multiplayer. No story commitment, just join a lobby and take your stress out on others.

    • Yeah, I was thinking of this game and maybe test it, but I don't want to pay $99 only to find out it triggers my motion sickness as it is a FPS.

  • I donโ€™t know if it suits your lifestyle but Iโ€™ve found that PlayStation Portal makes accessing all the ps5 games way easier, when I donโ€™t feel like heading to the big tv I just crash on the lounge or bed and since games load up super quick itโ€™s easy to get into something.

    • I hear ya'!. I've been tempted to buy the portal, but I already have a portable device (the switch) and given I don't have all the time in the world to play, then I can't justify it.

      Thanks for the recommendation ๐Ÿ˜Š

For motion sickness in FPS games, try adjusting the field of view to at least 100 degrees and sit further from the screen. High frame rate helps too. If that helps you but you still feel a bit queesie, it may get better or you push past it a bit and try to play a bit longer each day. Thatโ€™s how I became able to play them.

A little to the left - very wholesome organising game where you put things in order. There are 2 DLCs for it too once you finish the base game. Can very easily do a few levels at a time and pick up where you left off. The goal to complete a level differs from level to level and some even have multiple solutions.
