Driving for Ridesharing Services or Amazon Flex - Do I Need to Get Any Specific Car Insurance?

Hey buddies,

Was considering signing up to drive for ridesharing or deliveries for amazon, but I'm not sure if I should change my car insurance and CTP to business? Is it compulsory? Any downsides to continuing my car insurance as it is (private use)?

I had heard these organizations cover any insurance needed for drivers but I'm not sure. I'm in NSW by the way.

Just want to know what the official requirement is - wanting to protect myself if I get into an accident while working that's all.

Thanks.

Ask the rideshare company if required but well you are carrying a business so you surety want to be insured correctly, so maybe the best thing to do is ask your current private insurance company if your private insurance covers business activities like ride share, well its the insurance company thats going to pay you out if your in an accident not the share ride company but common sense would assume the answer would be a big no

I would check with your insurer. Normally as long as the primary purpose isn’t for business you should be fine but the last thing you want is to not be covered. They’ll be able to advise best.

  • Yes, most insurance companies won't cover you as soon as you say yes on the policy.

Try Suncorp, and the rates are higher.

Many insurers ask specifically if it will be used for ride share/delivery work, so not sure how you would be able to claim it as private?

  • Use your finely honed research skills. Amazon has information on What insurance do I need to have?. Uber has a page on Rideshare and delivery insurance. Then read the pds for your existing insurer to check coverage for commercial use.

  • Any downsides to continuing my car insurance as it is (private use)

yeah, you'll not be covered if you're in an accident.
