When to Buy an iPhone

My phone is dying so I am preparing to buy a new one.

I am thinking of an iPhone 15 Pro, but want to make sure I get a bargain/buy it when it's at the sweet point in its depreciation. Is it best to buy new v second hand, and is now the best time to buy one? And is there a best place to buy one? I am currently in France and will head through UK and U.S. on the way home, so can pick one up in any of these places if they're where the best deals are.

I am praying there is an iPhone pricing scholar here somewhere!

All the best
Walrus

When looking for an iPhone 15 Pro, consider:

iPhone 15 Pro A3102 for compatibility.

This is helpful. I thought they were all the same since they ditched the wall plug.

And the best time to buy a new iPhone is when you actually need a new phone.

Best time to buy the current model (new) is just after the new model is released.

As for the most depreciation, its just after each and every new model is released hence the above observation.

  • Apple Store in the US sells refurbished iPhones but currently only up to iPhone 14 and not that cheap due to our weak dollar

IMO the best pricing tends to be in Australia, we get those weirdly great deals like the recent one at JB hifi where you cancel a plan and save $500. I've never seen things like that overseas.

    • Great! I found this https://www.sellcell.com/smartphone-depreciation/ which suggests that on the resell market at least the trick is to wait until the next gen is released to get the best price if buying used. I wonder if this is true for buying new. If I was smarter/not on holiday I would scrape the bargains in here to see what's happened in Aus

  • Have you considered getting your existing phone fixed?

I have had one round of repairs (new battery, new screen), but I worry that the dunk in the pool that precipitated the previous repairs will keep giving me trouble. I use it for 2FA so uptime is important to me

IIRC ACL provides for two years warranty for iPhones purchased in Australia but only one year of Apple's international warranty if purchased overseas.

  • when its cheap

  • Use your dying phone to get some trade-in value and buy from JB.

why do you need a $1500 - $2000 phone, why not get a decent $500 android and avoid increasing inflation

    • don't want those green messages ;)

      • There's an android app for that.

    • My $250 android does the job. But i suppose if your $2000 to waste its up to them.

  • I have used my iPhone XS Max until now with a cracked screen. I am thinking about getting a new iPhone as well. I think it's interesting to get iPhone 16 which is the first to get AI, Apple Intelligence that is. I am also interested in knowing when is the sweet spot to purchase a new iPhone which is the latest release.
