  • new model? whats new? and what was wrong with the old one?

      • nah…. remote in DSE pic is different to both of those

EDIT: oh.. perhaps you meant the new one has the extra buttons for controlling TV, etc

        • does the new remote control the TV thru the ps3 or does it use IR? im hoping its all seamless unlike before where i have to fiddle around hoping that it would work. before my samsung tv remote would sometimes work with the ps3 and some time it just wouldnt.

        • I didn't know the PS3 could control the TV. I don't see how it can. It's only connection to the TV is the output video and sound.

        • CEC maybe? I know it works from TV to PS3, so I assume it could work the other way around.

The new remote has both bluetooth and infrared. It is designed to directly control a PS3, amp and TV from one remote. It has a few extra buttons you would need that aren't needed on a PS3-only remote, such as volume and channel for amps and TVs. It will control the devices directly, it does not send the control via the PS3 to the other devices. That method is CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) which is a shared control signal that is sent between devices connected with HDMI cables. The early (Phat) PS3 models did not support CEC (the hardware was omitted from the HDMI ports in those models) but was included from the Slim series. This is designed to turn on the TV and select the appropriate input automatically when you power up the PS3 for example. There is a setting on the TV and in the PS3 XMB to enable this feature. It is also known as: Anynet+ (Samsung); Aquos Link (Sharp); BRAVIA Link and BRAVIA Sync (Sony); HDMI-CEC (Hitachi); E-link (AOC); Kuro Link (Pioneer); CE-Link and Regza Link (Toshiba); RIHD (Remote Interactive over HDMI) (Onkyo); RuncoLink (Runco International); SimpLink (LG); HDAVI Control, EZ-Sync, VIERA Link (Panasonic); EasyLink (Philips); and NetCommand for HDMI (Mitsubishi). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#CEC

        • Quoted: "That method is CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) which is a shared control signal that is sent between devices connected with HDMI cables."

Just to be clear, you are saying "that" as in the old remote, right?

So the old remote control everything via HDMI CEC, but the new one directly from infrared and bluetooth.

        • No. Some people thought that control of the TV was achieved by the old remote talking to the PS3 over bluetooth, and having the PS3 relay the command via CEC to the TV. I was just clarifying what CEC was and how it works. The old remote only has buttons for PS3 functions anyway, so there is nothing else to control externally with it. Neither the old or new remotes use CEC. The old remote is only for the PS3 over bluetooth, whereas the new one has everything the old one has but also includes infrared remotes for TV and AMP. $20 for a bluetooth remote is a steal, but having IR included is great value. Considering the last replacement Sony remote I bought cost me $50, I think this is a good combo and worth the extra couple of dollars.

There's no difference between those two the one on the right has a playtv control sticker on it.. (you get it with the playtv) and it just has labels for bluray navigation. I believe the they are the old remotes..

    • +2

The old one was bluetooth only. The newer one is bluetooth plus infrared, allowing it to control your TV and amp as well once you program the correct manufacturer code/s in.

Dualshock 3 is more intuitive for bluray playback anyway, i don't see the need for a remote.

Ohh, poor babies can't use a controller.

      • logic fail?

  • $9.95 shipping - if you want it posted :)

picked up one of these at JB http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/81165

it strikes me as being more like a universal remote in functionality as it has the dualshock buttons and TV remote (bravia TV), so pretty simple to use and saves recharging the paddle.

horses for first courses i guess as we tend to use our ps3 as a network player more than gaming.

has it made a $20 improvement on our lives? Yes I believe it has.

  • Bugger. Bought one from JB for $24 only four days ago. Oh well.

  • If you can pick up the DSE deal is best. If you can't then ebgames has it for $23 for pickup (https://www.ebgames.com.au/ps3-139429-PlayStation-3-Blu-Ray-…). If that's not what gets your goat then go for jb who, I think, have it cheapest delivered: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/81165

    • The EB games one you linked is the older model, which is bluetooth-only and can only control the PS3. It is not the same model as the DSE or JB one.

      • Must be an old image (or they just don't have the right thing on the website). I got mine from them and they had it for $23 on discount from $40 and got them to pricematch Dick smith.

It's the full blown version. Says 'PS3 Remote V2' on the $40 sticker and has buttons for ps2, amp and tv and is filled with buttons top to bottom.

  • Is there a list of compatible amps/tvs?

  • +1

Does it only control Sony TVs?

  • +2

"can be used for watching movies on the incredible new Blu-Ray disc format."

    I lol'd.

  • I use the old model with a BT dongle on the HTPC, works great with XBMC, might be worth upgrading to the new one. Wonder if the newer remote sucks less juice then the older model.

    • Is it possible to use the Sony remote with a PS3 and HTPC, by selecting one unit or the other perhaps? Or am I being silly…

  • Would I still need the sticker/overlay that came with PlayTV to control that properly?

Also I'm a bit confused by some comments. Does this work with the Phat/fat PS3, or was that more about CEC?

    • +1

The sticker would only fit the old model. The new one does not have specific markings for PlayTV functions like record etc. Perhaps they will produce a new overlay to suit the new remotes? It will still work with the PlayTV, you will just have to remember which buttons to push or take cues from the on-screen display. This will work with all PS3 models, it is a bluetooth remote as well as IR, it is just that the Phat models did not support CEC over HDMI.

  • how long is the offer valid for?

  • Can anyone confirm if compatible TVs can be controlled with these remotes with an old Fat PS3?

    • Yes. Here is the instruction manual. http://uk.playstation.com/media/3ndS6pjj/CECH-ZRC_BD%20Remot…

The remote is 3 remotes in one. It has nothing to do with what model of PS3 you have. PS3 control is always done via bluetooth and works regardless of what model you own and is independent of the other devices. When you press the TV or AMP button it becomes a TV or AMP control directly via infrared. If you are in PS3 mode and press the volume up button for example, it automatically temporarily switches to TV mode and adjusts the volume for you via IR, then reverts to PS3 mode. It does not tell the PS3 to send a command to the other devices for you via CEC over HDMI. That might happen if your PS3 and TV are set up to do it (e.g. the TV can power up when the PS3 is powered up, but that is not a function of the remote). There is a large list of TV's from various manufacturers included in the inbuilt IR commands. See the list in the instruction manual. If you have a TV not on the list and you know the IR remote code, you can enter that manually and it will work. Only Sony amplifiers are listed in the control codes. I don't know if other manufacturers amplifiers will work, all my home entertainment components are Sony.

  • Cool, ordered the new model to collect tomorrow. Never realised you could now control the TV with PS3 remote. Yay!

  • can the old model ps3 remote control the TV? or only the new model ps3 remote control? thanks waiting for your reply

    • The old one can't - I have it, it does PS3 only.

    • Just read through the comments above. Pretty sure most TVs will need infrared, not Bluetooth, and you couldn't control your TV via any PS3 apart from maybe turning of off and on as part of CEC.

  • Now if only the PS3 could pair to the BD Remote and my Logitech Harmony PS3 Adapter at the same time…

  • Is there still stock at Home HQ nunawading mate?

    • I think most DSE stores are out of stock (ozbargained?) by now however you can have it for $22 ($2 more) delivered from JB on 29 NOV
