iPhone is a product whose warranty is specific to the place of purchase! Since, it is country specific, you cannot claim for it's warranty internationally.

So if buying from Kogan, is it AU warranty?

    • +3

Yeah I think I'd rather buy one from JB, with discounted gift cards it's probably around the same price (or even less).

    • I wanna know as well!

    • The handset comes with a one-year Apple international warranty.

An extended care warranty can also be purchased, which is covered by Kogan.com.

In reality at Apple Store, you can. It's just that any repair that involves parts replacement may result in out-of-pocket repair, or whole device replacement with a local model instead.

As an example, my australian iPhone X was warranty replaced in Beijing and I got a chinese model without a few features, back in 2018. It's a tricky process as Apple Store will actually deny your request to repair because it's a foreign model, but if you call Apple Support back home and they agree to arrange a replacement, Apple Store will likely honour that decision. It's most likely because too many people are milking Apple under international warranty (it's so common that one of the Shenzhen Apple Stores was banned from replacing iPhones altogether some years back).

You may not be able to activate AC+ for devices out of region, but AppleCare+ already activated is internationally recognised and should work just fine, as long as you pay the out-of-pocket fees. I personally won't pay for non-Apple insurance unless it's complementary or provided by my employer.

Please note: This is an international model and does not support FaceTime audio or eSim functionality.

    Made for China ?

    • Yea looks like it. Mainland Chinese iPhones do not support eSIM. They trade eSIM functionality for a second SIM slot which is arguably good to have too.

Had no idea they don't support FaceTime "audio" though.

Btw what does that even mean? Why do they specify FaceTime "audio", as if to imply that it supports FaceTime "video" but not "audio"?

      • +2

FaceTime Audio is categorised as VoIP/SIP service which requires a license to run in mainland China. Apple doesn't have that, so the feature is banned. Note this ban is not at provision policy level so you can't lift it even if it is activated in a different region, just like camera shutter sound cannot be turned off in Japan and UAE.

Also banning FaceTime Audio means connected Apple Watch won't be able to use Walkie-Talkie (which rely on its connected iPhone to have FaceTime Audio), even if the watch is coming from a different region.

FaceTime video call works fine in China.

I believe currently only chinese iPhones comes with dual physical SIMs. Given that, if it supports FaceTime Audio, it's HK or Macau version; If not, it's mainland China version.

Good info. Personally i wouldn’t take my chances unless i can test it out before buying, which is impossible through online order.
