Found this one might be even cheaper than the older model AX1800 EAP610 Omada ecosystem

I contacted TP-Link and was advised that you can plug it into your Omada system, and they work just fine.

However, they also advised that the Omada control would not work. So, it might work only for the local controller or upgrade the whole range to the Festa ecosystem (I'm not sure yet)

  • Can this run standalone without any controller?

    • -1

I dont think so because it called access point

    • Yes it can. You just need to download the free software controller on your PC/Laptop to configure it. Once configured you won't need the controller software unless you need to update it or reconfigure it.

I believe you can also directly connect to it as a standalone before you add it to the controller and configure it directly though most of the advanced options are set using the controller software. Keep in mind the newer AP's do not come with a POE injector.

      • Yep, no Poe adapter but does come with DC 240v adapter for direct power option

    • 100%
Can but pure ap of existing router. Festa cloud controller (free) setup via web page or app (web page provides more functionality).

Very similar gui to ubiquiti for setup and settings.

Seems to be slightly conflicting information in the description

…you can plug it into your Omada system, and they work just fine.
…they also advised that the Omada control would not work.

Does this mean that these will work with a local Omada controller (hardware or software) but not with the Omada Cloud controller?

That's what I thought. Supposedly, TP-Link says that Omada and Festa shouldn't be mixed. They look exactly the same, though.

Bought one of these earlier in the week and setup last night

Easy setup via free cloud controller, added existing wifi SSD settings and was setup with all wifi devices back online in only a handful of minutes. Currently connected to a ubiquiti edgerouter but looking at replacing with the Festa FR205 gateway, if it comes back into stock at Amazon.

Replaced an old Ubiqiuit AC-LITE, and clearly much better coverage and speeds from this unit compared to the previous. No issues powering it off existing POE unit (which is 802.3af not at, but its not a long cable run)
Any questions from my 30mins of setup knowledge, feel free to ask

Also, extra 15% off if you buy 2 currently in amazon promo, for those with larger areas or multi story houses

    • Can share a bit more about coverage? Just wondering if I need two for double storey.

      • I only have single story so no idea on its vertical range sorry.
        Mines ceiling mounted

        • Do you get enough range outside the house? Also I am assuming you have it mounted in a central location.

          • @OldSchoolHarry: haven't tested. Set it up and got it working last night, did inside house tests showing the range to the further corners of the house were improved, but as i need to replace the ceiling mount, took it back down instead of leaving it hanging from eth cable, and didn't go wandering around outside to test distance range.
If i find it lacking (doubtful, i dont need wifi walking down the street :) ), I'd likely just add another in a mesh setup.

            • @SBOB: Thanks for that. Can you confirm if you can setup multiple SSIDs, one for each of the different VLANs?

              • @OldSchoolHarry: Yep,
I run two (though not VLAN'd), one configured as 'Guest' (so internet bound only) and one for everything else.

Have to do it via the webpage cloud controller, couldnt see a way to do it with named SSID's or VLAN setup in the app.
WLAN config allows you to define WLAN groups, add multiple SSID's within each, and then per device you can assign what WLAN groups apply
(for a single home setup you'd just have one WLAN group, however many SSID's within that group, and assign that group to the AP)

                • @SBOB: Thanks for the info. I basically have two VLANs, one for IoT devices and another for personal devices. What I want to achieve is separate/isolated WiFi networks for each VLAN. Based on your explanation, that might be possible? idk, I might just wait until TP-Link releases more info, reviews etc.

@OldSchoolHarry: 100% possible. The cloud controller for their Festa range is the same as their Omada range from what I've seen. its just rebadged hardware that they are targeting a different market with, with free cloud controller (instead of paid) and limited hardware ranges compared to the full omada offering.

Quick couple of screenshots from the cloud controller showing how you can 'add' a new wireless network
                    https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/47341/114288/2024-07-1…
and when creating have the ability to enable VLAN and select VLAN tag #no
                    https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/47341/114289/2024-07-1…

as you can see in the first my WLAN group is 'Default' as i only need one, but you can create multiple if you were assigning some to one AP and others to a different AP etc.

                    • @SBOB: So kind of you to share those screenshots and confirming my doubts. I appreciate the effort. I will go ahead and buy one. Cheers :)

    • How much does cable run length affect PoE usability/ reliability? Can you get boosters? Thanks

      • Power drop over long cable
You can use boosters or Poe injectors

Just spoke to Tp-Link, they "do not advise using Festa with Omada" ..its either Omada or Festa .. apparantly Festa is their consumer grade product line and Omada is prosumer grade and will coexist going forward so interoperability will not be supported officially
