Hisense C1 4K Tri-Chroma Laser Mini Projector, $2099.99 (Was $3049.99) Delivered @ Costco (Membership Required)

150

I was torn between Hisense C1 and xgimi horizon ultra 4k but ended pulling the plug. Around $500 more at other places.

Almost all of the reviews are positive and highly rated, heard in one of them that it performs better than AWOL 3500/2500. Please do your own research.

I was suprised it could do Dolby Vision with so low lumems - but its just decoding.

This, Nebula by Anker Cosmos 4k upgraded or LG Cinebeam Q?

    • Definitely this….according to my research.

    • Just got nebula cosmos upgraded and is really good. Played outside today after lunch and see easily bright at 150 inch, about half as bright as inside but easily watchable just thrown up on my shed wall. Crystal clear inside with curtains open, looks almost as good clarity as my LG OLED C1. So nice to be able to move it around where I want it

  • hello folks, can anyone suggest me which one is good out of these 4 pls?
    - Samsung SP-LSP7T 4K UST Laser Projector
    - Hisense C1 4K TriChroma Laser Mini Projector
    - Xiaomi Mi 4K Laser Projector
    - XGIMI Horizon Ultra HD Projector

    • I did not consider Xiaomi in my list, but i chose C1 from the rest.

      • Thanks. I am inclined towards Samsung SP-LSP7T 4K UST Laser Projector since its UST

        • UST is fantastic option if space and cleanliness is an issue, also very uncluttered. I like it.

    • Take a look at this review. Generally speaking, The Hook Up provides objective and measurable results unlike 99% of other youtubers.

I got both C1 and Horizon Ultra. I bought the Ultra first and I absolutely love the aesthetic of the machine. It's clean, modern and the quality can be absolutely felt when you hold it. The remote was designed and made with good attention to detail comparing to C1's generic cheap plastic remote. However, I returned the Ultra at the end. The low contrast like The Hook Up found in the video doesn't bother me as much, but lack of official Netflix app and Apple TV do. Personally I don't want to attach a streaming stick or buy another Apple TV device just for those two purposes, it's messy and feel unnecessary.

I then bought the C1, the phyiscal quality is fine but not at Ultra's level. Yes, the casing is metal, but feel rather thin and just meh. The interface looks fairly bare, but serviceable and definitely prefer Ultra's Android TV UI. What immediately stood out is the picture quality in the dark, the contrast is notably higher and image appears to be a bit sharper because of that too. The most important thing is that it has both official Netflix app and Apple TV out-of-box which provide way better User Experience (VERY important to me).

Now, to be fair, both machine are fantastic in their own ways. To my eyes, I think the image quality are both fairly good when not comparing to each other. However, at the end, I chose C1's better app support and UX over Ultra's better aesthetic (subjective) and material/build quality.

One thing to note is that for some weird reason, my C1 would "blink" (go dark) every now and then. When it does, I can hear a shutter close-and-open like sound. I returned the first unit that did it and my second unit also does it from the 2nd day i got it. Before you ask, I did not use any HDMI cable, it's direct Netflix streaming play and all power cable is standard. Not sure why, but for now, it doesn't bother me and will just claim warranty if it gets worse…

  • Would this still display well on my old 'screen' or do I need special LED LAZER screen?

    • +1

I'm planning to project on white wall, so i think your old 'screen' should be just fine.

  • 1600 lumens… I would be concerned of the picture quality even in a dark room if you want to use it at a reasonable size.

    • Good point, but none of the reviews i watched were concerned about lumens on C1. Will try it myself and let you guys know.

      • +1

Be careful with a lot of the “reviews” you see on YouTube. Many of them I find with projector reviews are quite biased shills as they get them for free (and often do sponsorships with the manufacturer) so they are always proclaiming how amazing each one is. There is only a few YouTubers that produce completely unbiased stuff (eg The Hook Up)

        • Sure thing mate, i watched The Hook Up review too. Good thing about buying Costco is we got 60 days to return if we are not happy.

      • Keep in mind a lot of those reviews are probably in dark rooms and projecting at a small size.

You'll want a review on a 300" projection and without needing a super expensive projection wall/paint.

    • Yes i totally agree you’d need 3000 minimum

    • Hisense is known for under rating their light output. Many so called 2500 lumen projector uses maximum brightness, it makes the number look good, but in practice, nobody ever turn their projector at the peak brightness, because you lose contrast as a result and would have some green bias in color.

Hisense only rate their light output at the normal usage condition. Of course im not saying this one should be used in the bright lit room. No projector will do well with ambient light, especially if you want Dolby Vision. A projector can go as black as the ambient light. Even with the $10k JVC lcos machine, it wont get true black with ambient light on.

I have the C1 pro version from China, which is rated a bit higher lumen output (i think 2200 CVIA lumen), but i can tell you it out performs my old Viewsonic 3200 ANSI lumen. I watched Dune 2 the other day, the brightness of the desert is definitely eye blinding. I have to squint my eyes to watch those scenes. I projected on a 120" normal matted white screen.

      • Hi @Kaomichael, thank you for the excellent feedback. Based on your experience, can you please advise whether your C1 Pro Version would be bright enough for projecting to a 150" white screen/wall? And can I ask roughly how much you paid for the c1 pro including shipping and which international seller you used? Based on all the reviews and calculators online, it seems the C1 and C1 Pro's 1600/2000 CVIA lumens may be good for about a 120" increen but 150" may be a bit big and produce a somewhat dim/washed out image at that size. So I am considering the C2 Ultra which is about 2800/3000 CVIA and I feel that will produce a bright image at 150". But it is only available for sale from China. I am not sure what would happen if something in the projector breaks or stops working after 1 year. Do you know if Hisense Australia be willing to repair a C1 or C2 projector that has been imported from China?

    • I have C1 and can tell that it will definitely not give you a clear non-washout image during day time. It's OK when you shout all your blinds and have minimum sunlight goes through. However, its imagine will really shine when the light are off at night, really give you a great cinema like experience.

      • The Nebula cosmos 4k laser is good in a day lit room

  • Is it possible to mount it to the ceiling?

    • Yes

    • I used 2 of those super strong packaging straps mounted to a roof beam. Projector hangs off straps. Bonus if straps are ceiling white.

      Cost $0

But Im using a $150 projector

  • Any info on how many watts it draws?

Many 75"+ TVs use more energy than our Aircon (which is currently using 500w).

Projector seems to be the go. I have a cheapy Chinesium for movies (5m screen). Still going strong after 10yrs, uses 120w

    • Power consumption - 180W
      Standby consumption - ≤0.5W

    • +1

      75in TV's using over 500w? I'd be surprised

      • +1

I put an energy monitor on an LG 8K TV (it was 80").

Running the 'pretty sales vid"… it was pulling just on 800w!

Front sticker suggested it will chew 300 watts (after doing the maths) on average.

  • Can this be hanged from ceiling?

  • Was excited until I saw the reviews and realised I cant use my 5.1 soundbars without wires hanging around or drill some holes in the wall . I will wait for a UST deal now :-(

  • Looks quality, but aren't short-throws the way to go for projectors these days? What would be the reason for not getting a short-throw? They are much neater to install, and no problems with people walking in front of image or having the noisy fan right next to you where you're sitting, etc.

    • Existing mount perhaps, or if it's a temporary setup that gets put away when not being used, Ultra-Short Throw projectors are a pain to align.

    • Short throws/Ultra short throws are pretty bad in my opinion for the simple reason that they are generally limited to 100-150". At that point why are you getting a projector?

A $2000 85" TV will outperform a projector in many ways.

If you are getting a projector you generally want it as close to 300" as possible.

      • limited to 100-150". At that point why are you getting a projector?

Because 100 inches is a lot bigger than 85 inches, and 150 inches is almost twice the size! An 85 inch TV is a massive black object on your wall when not in use. And they're a lot more than $2000. Maybe your living area is the size of a basketball court, but many others have small or medium size spaces where 100-150 inches is enormous relative to seating distance.

    • One point is UST generally needs an expensive ALR screen in addition. Regular projector not so much

    • UST needs special tensioned screen or elsw you get skewed picture. To get 120" or more it still need to be a certain distance from the screen and most TV cabinet just isnt far enough. Thats why some of them the cabineta now have a feature where you can slide the center part out for those USTs. Yes, uts a pain to align.

These smart projectors can just sit on the table and can project onto any surfaces. It can be useful for people who actually renting, as they are unlikely to fix a screen on the wall.

  • Hisense aren't exactly a household name for projectors

    • That is true. I hate Hisense for bringing these really late to Australia. We got C1 in Q2 2024 and USA is expecting imax ceritified C2 this quarter.

    • I was a bit skeptical about them as well. The C1 is their first attempt in making a portable smart projectir. But they've been making UST projector for a while so they arent exactly newbie in laser technology.

I was very impressed with the C1 pro. Over the years i had well known brands like 3M, Epson x 2, Sony, Benq, Viewsonic. C1 pro excelled in the vibrant coloration and brightness. Of course the blackness isnt true black yet. But to get there you need to spend 3-4x the price, plus you need to darken your room with light absorbing materials on the wall! Thats a lot of investment to maybe get another 10-20% improvement in black level.

So for the price, i dont think you can get anything else better.
