Please Suggest a Laptop under $450

Hi Guys,

I urgently need to buy a cheap laptop for my wife. She will only use that for basic browsing and using PowerPoint at best. But it needs to reliable and last for at least 2-3 years.

Right now I can't find any suitable deals.

Saw another post on OZB to check Dell Outlet and found this - https://www.dell.com/en-au/outlet/refurbished-inspiron-15-35…

The only other deal active right now is this one - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/855369

Please suggest what should I do.

Thanks!

  • For $450, you are gonna get something with 4GB of RAM new.

It will be very slow 🐌. Be prepared for a very frustrated wife.

    Otherwise Dell Refurbished is good

    • Yes, that's why searching for a refurb one and was wondering if there was a better deal out there than the Dell I mentioned in the post.

  • refurb dell latitude or lenovo thinkpad (enterprise grade models)
something ideally with intel i5 or i7 of at least 8th gen or newer
and ideally 16gb ram as most will not be upgradeable

if you can get an extra $50 this looks ok

theres heaps of others under the dell and lenovo refurbs that match these, some under 450 but only 8gb ram

personally i think avoid hp, build quality is not as good

    • Isn't the 10th gen i5 older than the 5th gen Ryzen 5 of this one https://www.dell.com/en-au/outlet/refurbished-inspiron-15-35…

or is Dell Latitude far better than Dell Inspiron?

      • +1

Inspiron are their consumer grade laptops (read poor build quality, designed for light portability with cheap plastics & screen hinges)

Latitude are their enterprise/commercial grade laptops (read better build quality, designed for everyday portability with better plastics and often metal screen hinges etc)

The Ryzen 5500U is a 6 core cpu, and is very capable for what you say your wife will need - but is about the same age as the 10th gen intel chips (which, depending on the model, could be less powerful 4 core models).

Generally the Ryzens are a better bet power wise, but can be harder to find in enterprise/commercial grade laptops

EDIT: on the other deal you shared… the cpu is a lower range 8th gen i5. I would be worried how long it will remain 'reasonably usable', but that depends on how snappy your wife expects a laptop to be. Maybe it'll be fine, maybe it won't

      • The Ryzen 5 5500U in the Inspiron is a lot faster in multicore score comparing to the i5 in that old Latitude. However, that CPU in the refurbished Latitude is competent enough for what you intend to do (browsing, PowerPoint, etc).

My main computer is a 5.5yo ThinkPad with i5-8300H that's fast enough for website development, browsing, YouTubing, running VM — all at the same time. Like ThinkPad, Dell Latitude is a business grade laptop with top notch build quality. At sub-$500 I'll definitely look at refurbished corporate laptops.

      agree on this - I just bought a lenovo x1 carbon 7th gen for $300 i5, 16gb, 512gb ssd - wanted something thin,light and tough

Paid similar for a Lenovo X390 - but 8th gen.

  • This looks pretty decent if you can stretch a little. it's got an oled screen and 8gb ram. ASUS Vivobook Go 15 OLED Laptop

  • does it have to be a windows laptop? HP Chromebook 14" <$429 JBHifi seems to be much cheaper there

    • Yeah, unfortunately, my wife is only comfortable with using Windows for the long term.

  • Look at your local Facebook marketplace for the best bang for buck (assuming you know a bit about computers).

Then post a new topic back here after you get scammed.

Exactly. The gift that keeps on giving. Then the seller will reply saying it not a scam and the indefinite loop continues.

        • I might pre-order some popcorn in the Amazon sales.

@jv: Then start a forum post about how mediocre prime day has been. I'm ordering popcorn in anticipation.

  • Here are a few to give you a guide on decent prices - in no way associated with them, or recommending any of these sellers… Personally, I also inspect in person before buying a second hand portable device.

    Lenovo V14-ARE RYZEN 5 4500U 8GB 256GB SSD WIFI HDMI 14" W11 - $349 with 3 month warranty, but no real photos.
    HP PROBOOK 440 G7, i5 10210U, 8/16GB, NVMe 256GB, 1YR WTY FHD - $429 with 12 month warranty, but no real photos & somewhat slower 4 core intel cpu
    Dell Vostro 15 3510 i5-1135G7 8GB 256GB SSD 15.6 Laptop Notebook Win10Pro - $445 with 12 month warrant, but no real photos & somewhat slower 4 core intel cpu)

Honestly, these make the Dell refurb you found look like a good deal

  • Get one from here during the frequent '20% off' ebay sales for refurbs…

  • I'm very happy with my refurb Microsoft Surface 5. Obviously depends on intended use but I like having option to go tablet when lounging around.
