How Long Does It Take for a Fine to Reach You?

Howdy,

Im kinda following up on my last post: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/847423 on 24/5/24, I have not received anything in the mail yet.

Do you think if I copped a fine I would have received it by now? or how long does a fine generally take to reach you?

  • Yeah usually it's only a couple of weeks so you might have dodged a tax-bullet there. Well done. :)

    • Australia Post is getting slower.
Many residences only getting 2-3 deliveries per week nowadays.

Probably should allow 3 weeks these days

You can check your demerits online

Oh this is smart I didnt think of this. Do the demerit points come into effect once you pay tho? (I guess not in this situation), but im curious if you had to nominate a different driver would it show on your license immediately?

Edit: I just checked this and im still on 0.

Demerit points only take effect after the infringement has been finalised, i.e., paid or waived in court, etc.

People have deferred fines strategically. For example, if you're up for your license renewal (half price if have clean record for x years) then you could defer the infringement (elect to go to court, etc), renew then pay the fine ;)

But to answer your original question, suspect you are out of the woods now given time period.

        • Half price licence renewal? What state is that in? Cant be Victoria wife has never had a fine of any description in over 30 years and pays the same as me. Ive had 2 fines in 30 years myself and never heard or half price renewal.

    normally straight away
the wife crosses her arms, turns her back and says "fine"

Better for her to keep her hands on the steering wheel.

  • Generally within 2 weeks.

  • My rule of thumb is 4 weeks just in case it's delayed for some reason.

At this stage I'd be pretty happy to call it done and dusted.

I know it can be stressful waiting for something like this to come through, so glad you can start moving on from it.

  • I would say after a month you are generally in the clear.
Unless it was lost in the mail…

    • mailed to you (normally within 2 weeks)

    I reckon you've dodged it.

i believe nowadays they deliver it personally, so i advise you don't answer the door and avoid all contact with people for at least the next 6 months

  • Are the Mobile Speed Camera vehicles in VIC completely unmarked?

    • The majority of the time they’re unmarked.

I'd say you've dodged one this time. The camera allows for a few extra km/h and you might have been within that window so count your lucky stars

  • Did you change addresses in that time? Maybe it got sent to your old house.

  • About 30cm

  • 1-2 weeks, nothing more unless auspost lost it.
