Home Wi-Fi and Camera Recommendation

Needing some help with home wifi and camera setup. I have a FTTP upgrade next week and old Netcomm modem drops out and signal is weak throughout house and backyard.

Router/Mesh - Need a new router/mesh that will give me decent range. 4 bed standard brick home and larger backyard. FTTP box will go in front bedroom and I can run CAT6s anywhere needed in house for router/mesh. I just don't know if I need a mesh setup or modern router in centre of house will do. 100/20 plan and possibly 500 later in the year if that goes through. Any advice on setup on this please?

Cameras - I'd like to install 2 cameras outside my home. Once again I can run CAT6 to each so POE would be fine. I'd like app for alerts/online viewing and some sort of storage option that I could go view footage from up to 2 weeks or so if needed. My intitial thoughts are during power out or if someone turns your power off, I lose internet and camera power. Maybe I need a NAS and UPS to overcome this? A mate recommended Reolink, I don't know much about it.

I don't really have a budget, happy to spend what's needed to get me up to speed for my purpose. If anyone can share some thoughts or recommend some good online tech guides that'd be great.

  • I use a Telstra gen 3 modem that’s been rooted on superloop - modem was like $50 on fbmp
Works very well in my 5 bed house

    I use hikvision cameras.
Setup cost about 3k with 4 cameras (3x 4k, 1x 180* camera) 8 channel nvr, 8tb hard drive and install

$3000 for 4x WiFi cameras and NVR is carzy high. You can easily get Reolink setup for much less than $1000 with NVR.

        and install

        Sunday rates

      • Nah they are POE not wifi

        • PoE cameras are even cheaper! Less than $100 a camera and cat6 cable would cost you couple hundred buck depending on length. I guess if you get it installed by someone else that’ll be a few hundred bucks.
So all in all, it should be around 1-1.5k max.

    • The modem sounds good but $3k for cameras is well above what I'd like to spend. Just after basic 2 camera system with some way to continue recording in a power out.

So you are after two cameras and a NVR, all hardwired (CAT6) correct?
70%+ residential installers use Dahua as this gives you access to a full range (cameras, NVR, intercoms, displays, networking accessories, etc) and provides a very good price performance balance. If you consider Hikivision then there is usually a 100% premium over Dahua for not much gain in quality or performance. There are budget brands used by installers such as eZip and Hilook but they are there to make more profit for them not for yourself.

Therefore I'd stick with Dahua and get two 6/8MP cameras with a 4CH NVR installed with a 2TB/4TB HDD based on your budget. They all come with 3 year warranty and will provide you with a hassle free operation for many years to come.

        Well if you are after the Crème de la crème setup for a small install like yours and on the same time without having to break the bank I'd also consider the following;

        1 x Unifi Express
1 x Cloud Key Gen2 Plus with your preferred HDD/SSD for continuous recording
1 x U6 Lite Access Point (The Express will also act as a WiFi6 AP and a total of 2 APs would be sufficient for your 4BR house)
2 x G5 Bullet Cameras (If you can wait till the end of this month G5 Turret will be in stock, which has a more aesthetically pleasing form factor)
1 x 8 Port Gigabit POE switch to power the above (If the budget allows, then get a small unifi switch otherwise any other cheaper brand such as Dlink/TpLink will also work as long as they support POE+)

This would cover all your residential networking and security needs and provide you with the best features and management UI out there.

        • Thank you for your in-depth reply. I'll do some research on the Dahua, Hikvision and Reolink Cameras and NVR. Is there any problem with buying any of these units from Aliexpress?

My intitial thoughts are during power out or if someone turns your power off.

What if someone burn down the house, need remote back up too ☺️

    • Hahaha yeah true, may have to build a fireproof box for the house ;) My switchboard is outside the house in the meter panel. Easily assessable pretty easy to bypass my camera system without having a UPS installed.

Reolink is all you need! This 4x 12MP camera system is a great choice and much better than 4k system both quality and feature wise. There are cheaper alternatives available too (5MP, 4k etc). By default it includes a 2TB hdd which you can swap put later on for an 8TB for around $250 (only if you need to).
You can also run a Reolink PoE doorbell to this NVR as a fifth camera as the NVR supports upto 8 cameras.

You can get a CyberPower VP1600ELCD UPS for less than $300 which will keep the cameras and network equipment running for more than 5 hours easily.

    • Thanks for the heads-up on Reolink, having a look now.

UPS wise I'd be happy with only 1 hour or so backup. Do you think a VP700ELCD would be fine to run a NTD, NVR and Router for an hour? I ask as they are so cheap at $125.

So a 700VA UPS can run a 60w load for 57 minutes. I would say go for a 900VA - 1000VA just to allow some margin for future expansions such as smart home/security devices.

        • Appreciated :)

  • Ideally, stick to a good brand eg: ubiquiti. You will need a router, POE switch and a couple of access points that support POE. Sometime, you can get a router which also has POE ports for the AP's. It would be easier as you can run cat6e cable and you can place the AP where you want them regardless of access power points. Depending on how many POE cameras you need , you might have a to go a second POE switch as one POE switch might not be able to support all devices.

    • Ubiquiti is not worth it for an average home user. It is way too overpriced.

  • Thanks everyone for the replies, really appreciate it. Thinking I'll get the NTD installed in the garage with the FTTP upgrade. That way I can have NTD, router, NVR and UPS all together. Don't think the wife would be to happy about that setup in the bedroom near the current lead-in lol.

Cameras, NVR and UPS I'll do some more research on.

Regarding router I've been checking out Mesh systems. Looks pretty simple setup for me and if I go 3 pack should have adequate coverage. What's the best option out of DECO X50, X75 or the Eero 6+/pro? I see Goodguys commercial has a couple of deals on the DECO's and Amazon on the Eero atm. Either option I can still run CAT6's to each unit if needed.
