Is an Amazon Echo Pop a Good Gift for a 12yo?

Doing my Christmas shopping early. Am out of touch with this age group. Would the parents have concerns?

I think smart speakers as presents is such a cop out. It always feels like a last minute idea

    • What if it were a quality smart speaker and come with 12 months subscription to streaming service?

  • Ugh. Had to google what that was.

Depends on the 12 year old.

Mine has Sennheiser HD59Xs cause I want him to appreciate good sound and hardware that will last.

And he is not getting an Amazon/Apple smart speaker to install (listen) into his room. But then again, I'm vaguely aware of privacy concerns whereas most parents are probably not.

Holy crap, do not buy a 12 year old a smart speaker. It involves digital accounts, data harvesting and all the crap kids should be exposed to as late as possible in life. Even if the parents aren't concerned, you should be.

If you're worried about what the parents think, buy them books. Getting kids reading is never a bad thing. If my brother ever pisses me off though I'm buying his daughter a drum kit.

Judging by most of the kids at my daughter’s school who are this age, vapes. Nearly every single one of them vapes… and for all the neg voters who are outraged, this is obvious sarcasm. Dont buy vapes… and for the parents that do buy vapes for their 12~16yo kids, you should be ashamed.

I have found my daughter is at that age now where she wants to listen to her own music, so I ended up getting her a really nice set of quality noise cancelling headphones and a pair of wireless ear buds. They seem to want to listen to music, just not through Bluetooth speakers. I really don’t want to listen to Tay Tay or Katy Perry out loud anyway.

For her birthday this year, she is showing my a lot of Spotify stuff, so I might get her a subscription for that, and she loves playing the Nintendo, so maybe a year sub for online play. And she plays a lot of Minecraft and Roblox (🤮), so some in game currency to spend?

  • Thanks for the feedback! I had a feeling it might be a bad idea. I usually buy this child a book, which gets an underwhelming reaction…

  • I have an Echo Pop.

I bought it because I have smart home appliances and I occasionally use it as a bluetooth speaker.

the BT speaker part is not a feature I'd use very often, but the smart home appliance are.

Does your daughter have smart home stuff herself? if not, then bad idea.

  • Money, while it sounds like poor idea you could combine it with a conversation on what the kid would like to buy/save for…. that way you are actively taking an interest and may get an idea for future gift ideas……

This kid is quite spoilt with big bank balances gifted by grandparents. Also never says thanks for anything. Decided on another book!

  • no, get them a LOUD CLICKER toy and a bottle of red cordial
