Google Pixel vs Google One Subscription
At this price, Assuming that it takes ≈5 years of Google One subscription to recover the cost of the Pixel phone purchased today, i.e. the break-even period is ≈5 years, one must remember that the hundreds of GBs of pictures and videos over this period will continue to be stored for free for life, if backed up using a Pixel device, but one has to continue paying a fat subscription for these files for the rest of life with a Google One subscription. xdaforums Discussion

There is lot of discussion online how you can automate to Sync media from your other phones to pixel then backing them to google photos.

    Quote from XDA:

"I'm told Pixel Experience ROM (and some other custom ROMs and mods) allow for spoofing the device details to make Google Photos believe that the device is a Pixel, thereby unlocking unlimited storage on Google Photos."

Sounds interesting. I have a Pixel 1 128gb with a bulging battery so might need to look at the ROM approach for a more reliable phone in the future. It's my second Pixel as the first one had a bulging battery as well and was replaced well outside of warranty by Google free of charge. You just need to harp on about safety and ACL rights to get a free replacement refurbished phone.

    • Can this be done without messing up the creation date of photo

      • +1

Keen to know this myself. I tried it and it messed up the image creation dates in the backup. Gave it up as a bad job and I'm back feeding the Google overlords.

2 bulging batteries? That's bad luck. Make sure you are using a quality charger and not over charging/generating excess heat. Most of my phone batteries grow weak and tired due to old age but no bulging which is a fire hazard. You can try replacing yourself if you are adept.

  • Trying to find a second hand 1st gen Pixel at a decent price hasn't been easy

    • Why would you want a 1st Gen Pixel?

I put one in a box one I got a newer pixel and havent touched it since

For unlimited google photos storage maybe? I heard about this but not sure if it is still a thing

        • Well there you go, turns out it is:

          https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6220791?co=GENIE.Pl…

          "Pixel (1st generation)
You get unlimited storage in Original quality at no charge. You won’t be able to back up in Storage saver."

Still is, I bought a 32gb for $80 a few years ago. 400Tb of photos/videos on Google photos later. Best investment ever.

      • Can I have the box?

      • Say less I'll buy it off you

          1. Pulled out the Pixel, all packaging etc and put it on charge.
          2. Bragged to my wife how I was right in keeping all the old devices and original packaging etc (dont feel as vindicated as I hoped)
          3. Sounds like I have an ebay listing in my future

Edit: Suddenly getting a few Private messages on Ozbargain lol

  • Give me a pixel 1. I need a back up pixel 1 for unlimited storage. I'll cry the day my pixel 1 dies.

My P1 battery just died. So I'm going to see if I can replace the battery myself. Wish me luck!

  • Lol now everyone will be on a lookout for pixel 1, myself included

    • This has been known for years, a lot of people are

Anybody wanting to buy one to use as a cheap decent phone with a 5.0" screen (a rare combination these days!) be aware that the Pixel 2 may not necessarily be Plug and Play with any telco but Telstra once they turn off 3G soon due to the limited VoLTE support from Optus & Vodafone

  • I reckon the batteries would be pretty shot in these old flagships. Bit of a lucky dip IMO.

  • Loving my 2 xl
Nor sure which I would upgrade to

  • No 2 XL 😭

Mobileciti has them in stock but they're not doing a sale on em unfortunately.

  • PSA: 2 XL (voice) will no longer work when 3G network is shutdown - unless you're on Telstra which supports the 4G voice on 2XL
