WD SDD from The Future (?!)

I was looking for a "basic" SSD and came across a "new" 1T WD SDD on ebay for < $90 on Ebay. More than 100 sold claimed the seller. 99.5% approval rating as well. The seller, that is. . "Shipped from NSW" it said (hah!). So I bought one. Three weeks later it arrived.

Anyway, the SDD failed gparted so I started the return process. Checking the specification label on the SDD I read its DoM (Date of Manufacture) is the 1st November 2024.

Should I have waited until the DoM is reached?

Awww come on. We all luv a bargain ;-)

      • More than your data?

        • Did you know that the only data you're likely to lose the the data not backed up.

And, once you have it a back up, you'll never need it.

          • @ArskinF: For me, backups have come in useful on more than one occasion. I've had a few HDDs and SSDs fail over the years.

Personally, I like not having to restore from backups.

      • This is true, I love buying things on eBay too. What I meant was given the great price and suspect manufacture date, then possibility of it being fake is high since anyone can sell on eBay

  • Fake storage is one of the most common scams on ebay. Honestly, ebay is not worth the risk and hassle. There are plenty of legit computer stores selling 1TB SSDs for under $90.

Checking the specification label on the SDD I read its DoM (Date of Manufacture) is the 1st November 2024.

If it is 1/11/2024, not everyone uses our formatting for dates. It could in fact be the 11th of January 2024.

If it actually says "1st November 2024", then clearly it's fake.

    • "1Nov2024", it says.

        That is the expiry date.

      • Reading comprehension doesn't seem to be your strong suite, so let me point it out to you:
That means it's fake. Since you bought it on eBay, lodge a return to seller due to fake items.

"Dwight, at 8:00 a.m. today, someone lists a fake SSD on eBay. Do not buy the SSD. More instructions will follow.

    Cordially, Future Dwight."
