$21.90 for a 5k slow charger. No deal.

5000mAh, that is minimal energy storage. Hard pass.

  • 5000mAh with 10W for $16.90 is not very enticing mate!

Counterpoint to the other posters, 5000mAh is my favourite battery size. I need to charge my phone 0.5-1 times while I'm out. I don't need to carry a 20,000 mAh behemoth to do that.

10W here is a deal breaker though.

    • That's fair, I'd counter-counterpoint with something like the Iniu mini, 22.5W 10k, similar length and thickness, but twice as wide, which is only $25.

For me it's all about what fits in my pocket comfortably. I have the Iniu one and when stacked with my phone it is uncomfortably thick and heavy. Something narrow like this, if it could fit next to my phone in my pocket rather than stacked it coudl be more comfortable. I have never used this form factor so can't really comment.

My favorite form factor for a small battery is this style (I actually have this exact battery and it is by far my most used). https://www.amazon.com.au/Charmast-Portable-External-Compati…

        • I love how it connects so nicely to the bottom of the phone! It's about $27 at the moment, is that a good price for this one you suggested?

@Misha Bakunin: The last time I bought one it was $20.78 so not the best price but not terrible either. If you aren't in a rush I would hold out for a better deal. THe Apple version is currently available for $21 as a lightning deal for example.

            • @EBC: Not in a rush, will hold out, thanks.

            • @EBC: Although on eBay it's about $40-50. So maybe it's not so bad…

@Misha Bakunin: Avoid the Charmast IMO. It's not actually 5,000 mAh.

I ran one through some tests and it's likely a ~3,500 mAh cell. And not a very good quality cell either as capacity drops a lot under increasing load.

I tested the Charmast, VRURC and Veektomx 5,000 mAh mini power banks to compare. The sizing suggests they use a 21700 cell, but no surprise they use a cheap lower capacity cell rather than shelling out for a more expensive 5,000 mAh cell.

The best was the VRURC T0558. It appears to have an actual proper capacity cell but not well rated for fast charging, so you only get about 75% of the capacity if fast charging.

The Charmast was the worst. The Veektomx was a bit better but still not great. Both Charmast and Veektomx are generally best avoided overall as brands – none of their power banks I have tested actually get the rated capacity (after normal efficiency losses).

The VRURC T0558 is only $20 currently but even so it's hard to recommend. I think this style of power bank puts too much load on the USB-C connector, but it can be ok if you are careful.

Sadly there just aren't really any good options yet for fast charging mini power banks - at least not on the affordable end of the price range.

            • @Prong: Thanks for this, good to hear from someone who has tested these properly. As I said in my original post, I just need 0.5-1 full charge out of these batteries so while Charmast might not be a true 5000, that doesn't really matter to my use case.

I have always been a bit nervous about the connector putting stress on the charging port but I have never actually had a problem with it. But I agree, there aren't many good options in the mini power bank space. I imagine from the comments on posts like this criticising the battery for not having enough capacity, there just isn't much incentive to develop one. I will forever defend the mini power banks though. Wish there were more options.

              • @EBC: Yeah the main issue is the poor quality cells which are not rated for the wattage when charging a phone. So the cell will wear quite fast and lose capacity every time it is used. Whereas a quality cell is rated for the output wattage and there is comparatively little wear each time it is used.

                • @Prong: Hey if I get to that point without losing it (the other downside of this style is that it is easier to lose) I'll take it.

For anyone else who ends up here in the future, I actually bought a VRURC T0558 after this conversation and have to return it because it doesn't maintain connection with my phone when it is in my pocket.

                  • @EBC: Yeah definitely too much load IMO on the USB-C connection to have it plugged in while in a pocket. I wouldn't recommend the VRURC T-558 in general. It's the best of a bad bunch but still not a good power bank.

I picked up a Sharge Flow Mini to test because I like the concept of a removable connector and a short USB-C cable - despite being limited to 5V charging. But it doesn't meet the rated capacity either. It appears to be a 4000 mAh cell - and one that's not even well rated for suppling the 12W it is rated for as it only gives that when pulling 5W or so.

I think my ideal would be a slim 7,500mAh fast charging (9V, 2A, 18W is fine) using a decent quality phone battery cell rated for the necessary output (which is not a big ask). Make it the same width as a phone but shorter, and give it magnets for attaching to a phone (but not bother with wireless charging) and a short USB-C cable with right angle plug. That way you can magnet it to the back of a phone and plug it in and there won't be any excess load if slipped into a pocket.

        • Is the connector foldable (like the Abker version) or does it just stick out permanently? Thanks
