Docking Station for Dell Latitude 7440 Laptop

Hi all, last time I asked a question in regards to my laptop to find a suitable docking station it was really helpful.

I am in a similar situation again. Got a new laptop for work and the thinkpad dock I have is not compatible with my current laptop.

Could someone tell me if the older Dell docks like WD15 would be compatible with Dell Latitude 7440?

Don’t really want to spend a lot just need something that will connect to two monitors and charge my laptop at the same time.

Any other suggestions even if it’s not Dell dock is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

  • You can go cheap if your monitors aren’t 4K

  • What connection do you need? Eg usb-c, HDMI, etc

    • The laptop charger connection is usb-c. Is that what you mean?

      • I assume they mean on the dock

      • There are '14 in 1' docks on Amazon for under $100 - they seem to mostly have HDMI connections for the monitors if that is fine with you. Or you can get 7 in 1 or whatever needed.

Any dock, including the WD15, should work (why doesnt the think pad one work? It should be fine). Its just a question of whether it has enough outlets/connections to attach everything you need. eg for me I have 1 monitor + mouse + keyboard (separate keyboard) + headphones (obviously you can use bluetooth headphones if the laptop allows for direct connections) plus ethernet. One cable to the laptop that I plug in to the laptop itself (USB-C) and everything then works

If you have 2 monitors then obviously you will need 2 HDMI/monitor connections plus whatever else you need

        • The reason the thinkpad one doesn’t work is it connects via one link cable. If it was the usb c version I believe it would have worked.

  • Don’t mind what it connects to in dock..have vga, hdmi, display cables

  • What thinkpad dock do you have?

    • Lenovo DU9047S1 Thinkpad OneLink+

So short answer is not compatible.

You need to get the following

So get WD19 at least. Should cost you around $50-100 from marketplace.

  • You can likely use a USB-C dock. Have a look at some of the recent forum threads for specific recommendations. There are also some older deals(example) that appear to be still in stock - you'd need to confirm they work in terms of supported resolutions, etc.

I've been using a WD22TB4 Thunderbolt 4 for about 1.5 years without any issues.

  • i have one of these laptops, i use a generic docking station and have 2 monitors connected with hdmi connection to two monitors.

the old school docks for dell used a proprietary connector under the laptop which isnt compatible.

    • Thanks for the info.

So does the generic dock charge your laptop as well?

  • Via USBC yes, depending on the dock itself if it does support it. If it doesn't you will need to use the dell charger

  • I’ve used to use wd19tb with my personal 7200 and work provided 7440 - it’s good and will do everything you want it to do. Main issue I’ve found and it’s become very annoying - it’s a fan! Sometimes it might be very loud and will fail easily. Currently, I’m using fanless Caldigit TS4 but it’s expensive.
At work we also use HP branded fanless docks - Thunderbolt 4 120 watt. Compact and powerful.
