    Frozen

    lol

  • Are you talking cooked or raw? I only buy raw so tapping out if you're buying cooked (frozen).

    • Raw prawns please :)

My current preference: Tassal farmed black tigers from Woolies farmed in Yamba & Proserpine

        • good shout ill need to give these a go. every frozen prawn ive bought has that chemically (like Styrofoam) smell, but that has been a result of buying SEA prawns. Noting the image still has all the skin on, are these degutted?

@JDMcarfan: They're whole, but being farmed have pretty clean poo chutes. Avoid the Karumba banana prawns as they have that ammonia vibe. I also rate Crystal Bay but the raw ones are often stocked out at my local; also sold in a 3kg pack at Costco

            • @sumyungguy: thanks mate! will buy a pack and give them a go.
At 26.50 its pretty good value compared to the fish monger
and ammonia is the smell (you it on the head)

              • @JDMcarfan: I used to ask for frozen from the deli but Woolies said they're no longer permitted to sell them. When I realised these 1kg storage-friendly packs were available I stopped buying from my fisho.

        • Thanks for the suggestion. I will give this a go :)

        • The Tassal farmed raw prawns are the only prawns I buy from woolies. I don't detect much ammonia.

    Is that a euphemism ?

Hope you find a good vendor. Unfortunately I can't stand the smell

  • They all come from the same ocean.

    • Apparently max growth rates for farmed tigers occur in 15–20 ppt salinity—seawater is normally 35 ppt

Yeah but if you buy stuff which is product of or packed in SEA/China they almost always soak them sodium tripolyphosphate which changes their texture and retain water making them taste like nothing. Then you wonder why you wasted your money on these trash prawns.

  • Be conscious of the source of the prawns. Good report recently on the slave industry in India https://apnews.com/article/india-shrimp-seafood-industry-lab…

The prawn industry is huge. They should have an onlyfarms page.

Why don’t you just Google your local seafood stores and check reviews then call and ask if they have what you want?

  • Why don't you buy these and freeze them yourself; don't have the sulphites in the frozen ones.

Supermarket deli counter prawns are thawed from frozen. Some specialist seafood retailers will have purchased fresh prawns from the markets. Sodium metabisulphite is used to prevent black spot in wild-caught trawler prawns. Pretty sure farmed prawns are free from sodium metabisulphite.

      • Yes, thawed from frozen. I haven't found freezing from thawed affects texture or taste. Worth it when these go for $12-18/kg before incentives.

  • I've found the Aldi Australian peeled and tail off prawns to be good. no poo tubes and a good size.
