Ethernet cable do I need one?

I download music each month I pay monthly for, it’s been all good just the odd song here and there in past had issue with.
But I like to download them in lossless flac.

Last month I tried to down this file with 47 songs it got to as high as 1.8gb occasionally less etc and drops. Says network connection.

Tried about 20 times and tried another day when kids and streaming services was not being used still failed.
This was for the may month songs.

I been away at work and trying again back home same old just not downloading gets so far and drops.

So i started downloading June months songs the smaller 13 songs worked as did the 44 songs but the 39 songs under another category is not just like previous month gets so far like 1.5 gb and drops.

Would wifi be an issue as it’s weird how songs category songs worked ok but not others.

Would getting a Ethernet cable plugged from pc to modem help? Modem about 20ft away don’t have issues on the net or streaming movies.
If Ethernet cables help lots what do you recommend I take length does not effects things?
And any good ones but cheap from regular stores or best getting online for better and better price just means I not be able to download the songs for another 4 weeks possibly.

  • Where are you downloading them from?

You could have some packet loss somewhere, but that could be your ISP, the source, your WiFi, your computer, could be many things.

Do you notice issues on downloads? Streaming or anything else internet related on the device or even other devices? If it is on other devices, could indicate an ISP issue.

May help to rule out other issues but there shouldn't be any issue downloading over wifi.

  • as said the issue could be at lots of different places along the 'chain'. But a Cat 6 cable will cost you under $10 for 1 to 3m, and ethernet is more solid than wifi (less interference/ potential interference) so why not give it a go. The length of the cable doesnt really matter if its shorter than many more metres than you are considering. You could get a Cat6a or 7 cable but I'm guessing your data plan wont support the speeds even a standard Cat 6 cable can deliver so probably no benefit (not that these cost a huge amount more)

  • From where? Share please

  • download music each month

    Which app/service/platform?

Can you download 47 individual files?

    Internet connection?

    Download manager with resume function?

    • I’m using Microsoft edge any recommendations on download manager with it?

Yes I could probably down load individual but I’m trying to keep them under same file

      • recommendations on download manager with it?

        Depends on the source….

        under same file

        Same folder/add to playlist

Considering a 10m ethernet cable would only cost about $10, its worth trying to eliminate it as the cause. Its costing you more than that in time wasting and annoyance each month. I doubt that last short distance of wifi would be the problem though.

  • Have you tried one song at a time?
If everything else on the network is working fine, then it's not the network.

  • It's impossible to tell without any details on your setup (PC, router, site downloading from in particular). But there's a few things you could try

Download a large file from somewhere else, the Ubuntu ISO for example - https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop
Try an ethernet cable, if it's bothering you that much it's worth it for a few bucks to try. That has benefits by itself
Reach out to where you're downloading from and see if it's happening on their end or some limitations. If they're using cheap file hosting they might have limits causing the problem.

I changed from cat 6 to cat 8 and my song downloads doubled. I was downloading 100 songs. Now i can download 200.

  • I ended up downloading 10 songs then another 10 and then 14 and 13 yes I could have tried differently 20 then 27 but i thought make them smaller downloads and it worked lol. Still not sure how it failed each time doing the 47 together.
