iPad Air Screen Replacement Cost

So I dropped my iPad today and the screen has crackedšŸ˜–. I went to the Apple Store and they quoted me $400 for a replacement of the device, not a repair. Apparently they donā€™t do screen repairs for iPads šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø. I then went to Universal Phone Services and they quoted me $499 for a screen repair.

Given this is an iPad Air 5th Gen are screen repairs this much? Looking online I see quotes ranging from $169 through $309.

Anyway just thought Iā€™d ask the ozbargain community if they know whatā€™s a reasonable cost to repair an iPad Air 5th Gen screen.

How bad the crack? You could just slap a screen protector on.

    • Pretty bad. It spider webs from one side to another

    Probably non genuine screens

    • Its not a simple fix to replace iPad screen
Thats why Apple just offers a swap

But if OP can get it done for $169 then go for it. Thats very cheap!
Just at that price the screen wont be as good but usually acceptable given the low cost

don't do it I say. heard from multiple people that went the cheap way. they install a cheap display and doesn't agree with apple OS so ends up not registering touches properly and sometimes other issues. after repeated returns to get it fixed there is no progress, most likely they do nothing and say can't be fixed unless more money paid.

they said get it done at apple or sell the broken one and get a new one.

  • Not sure if it helps, but when I got a quote to replace the battery in an iPad Air 2, I was told thereā€™s a 50% chance of cracking the screen, which would be worn by me. I didnā€™t go ahead. In your case, Iā€™d probably pay the $400 for a replacement iPad.

    • OP wants screen replaced as its alredy cracked.
ipad air 2 is a pain to fix anything so horrendously expensive

  • I assume your contents insurance excess is too high for this? Have you checked out the repair guide on iFixit? iPad screens have always rated difficult so I'd be sceptical of the capability of an independent repairer. When you consider street price for pre-owned $600, new price from $774 then $400 is probs the best option. I have the same model 256GB wi-fi, paid $663 pre-owned in May.

  • In the odd chance you have Amex platinum credit card, they have a free phone screen insurance which I know some people use it on your ipads (invoice can be written as phone to meet the criteria) ;)

  • not ipad air but yeah got a cracked screen on my budget ipad.

luckily I had a cheap plastic screen protector on it so thats like kind of holding it together.

discovered same thing as you cost to fix the screen was the same price I paid for the ipad back before price jack for like $369 or $379.

heard from others don't go third party. they use cheap replacement display and had issues where it becomes non responsive and after repeated return and being asked for more money they realised they were getting scammed stuck with an equal value broken ipad.

I considered selling mine with screen cracked and paying the difference to buy a new one of the same model (9th gen I think) for less total than it costs to replace the screen at apple. but who knows it won't happen again? I decided not to bother and just own it.

for any ozber it's basically *just learn to live with it. weirdly I can notice the cracks more in portrait position, in landscape I can barely notice the cracks so watching movies is completely fine.
