  • Keen to know who still carries physical cards around with them? I haven't in several years

    • +2

I still carry my costco card, white card and other licenses for work everyday. You can also put cash in it not just cards.

      • +7

You can ditch your Costco card and use the digital app if you want

        • What happens when the app bugs out? I had it happen to me so many times at the worst. I carry my card now

I do , and you should too .

Keen to know who doesn't. Demographically, out of curiosity. Because apparently there are people surprised some would still need physical cards.

I mean, when casually walking to the big supermarket nearby it's fine not to take everything but your charged-enough phone, and you won't pay extra for using card (unless it's Aldi). But then, people in Vic still can't have their PT cards aka Myki on an iphone.

        • So people in Vic still can't use Myki on iphones at the moment.

I am very surprised as a Millenial NSW resident…

Drivers license: Digital through Service NSW app
        Medicare: Digital through Medicare app
        Credit Cards: Apple Pay
Debit Card: Apple Pay (ANZ, withdraw at ATM if needed)
Public Transport: Opal Card app or tap Credit Card

Haven't carried cash around in a very long time either

So what do you do if you want to buy something and the EFTPOS machine is down?

Last time this happened to me at a petrol station, I was the only one who could pay as I always carry cash just in case

          • @kerfuffle: It hasn’t happened to me once and I’m out and about everyday

          • @kerfuffle: Happened to me and no issues. Petrol stations have processes for situations like this. They take your details and you can bank transfer to them at a later stage.

            It's such a rare occurrence.

    • I still carry my driver's license and medicare even if I have the app. Started bringing a spare debit card too for emergencies. That's about it.

      • ANZ card on Apple Pay can withdraw from ANZ ATM’s.

    • I literally had to buy a case like this for the physical cards. Some places still don't accept a digital license and others want to see a physical credit card (had issues with checking into the Crown Sydney - they needed a physical credit card).

      • I don't know of any hotel that doesn't require a physical credit card when checking in

        • they don't though. It's just tap and pay for the holding deposit.

    • I still carry my wallet with me. Debit, credit cards, licence, cardboard loyalty cards (e.g. Krispy Kreme). I don’t have any issues with it and would prefer to have cards on me in case my phone dies when I’m out, which isn’t often anyway but I prefer the redundancy.

Case in point for needing a card when out; I was out the other day and I needed to update my card details in one of my apps as the card that was in the app had expired and I hadn’t used the app in a very long time. Instead of digging around in various apps (e.g. Apple Wallet, Virgin Money, Amex etc. — I’m also not sure if these apps have all the card data in them? I just checked for all my cards and it only has the last four digits, Amex has the card number but no CVC) to get the card details I could just pull it out of my wallet. This has actually happened a few times when I’ve been out and I’ve been thankful I carry around my wallet for that reason, although I guess I could save the details in my notes app or something.

Right now for example I’m on the toilet making a purchase and I need to enter my card details but my card is in the other room, so I have to wait until my business is done before I can put the order through. If I had my wallet on me I’d be able to make the purchase faster and hopefully the click and collect would be ready sooner.

Just like how I’m not chomping at the bit to apply for a digital licence, a digital ID and moving to being completely cashless, my pants pocket is also not chomping at the bit to go wallet-less. I actually used a vending machine a couple of months ago that required coins if you can believe it. Doesn’t happen often but keeping a coin pouch in my car is something I will continue to do.

Now, fair day to you sir! tips fedora

some card providers (e.g. Citibank, Westpac) allow full details, including cvc, to be shown in their apps

I carry physical debit and credit cards - I've had several situations where I've needed to use them, e.g. taking money out of an ATM, and facing an EFTPOS machine where the "tap" functionality wasn't working properly and needed to insert the card.

Also plenty of scenarios where "digital" versions of cards are not accepted - hiring a car still seems to be a bit difficult with a digital drivers' license, for example. Some hotels still want a physical card for their security deposit…etc.

      • Sure, but in my experience these situations are the exception not the everyday experience. For eg, if I’m hiring a car, I’ll bring my physical ID and credit card. But there is no need to carry them every day. I feel quite free with just my phone

        • Sure, but in my experience these situations are the exception not the everyday experience.

People vary in their need to be prepared for exceptions - there are some people who will be happy to leave the house with 20% battery on their phone, and there are those who carry a powerbank in their back pocket and only leave the house on 100% battery.

But there is no need to carry them every day.

I'm not trying to convince you to carry physical cards, if you don't feel the need to, then that's fine. However, you asked a question about who carries physical cards, and I'm just responding directly to that. People have different preferences.

I feel quite free with just my phone

Funny how things work, but I actually feel much more free when I can head out of the house with just my wallet and leave my phone at home.

    • Work credit card and metro card. Although I’m overseas now so I’ve got my main cards in there.

  • Believe this is the old version of the case where the action button is a cut out and not a physical button, almost bought it when DJs were clearing them out but decided against as it's really finicky if you do use the action button often

Belroy send you an entirely new case if you send them proof of purchase

      • really you have done this? do you keep the old case too?

        • seems im getting a extra case mailed out to me!

  • I’ve had a few of these and a really rate them. Impressed by the security of the clasp and now well they hold up.

    • What’s bad about them?

      • No wireless charging (not that I’ve ever had a desire to use it) and my new one didn’t come with a little SIM card ejector pin hidden in the case like my old one did

Doesn’t let you check out for the green one so I gave up
