[SOLVED] Hardware Passkeys for Consumers

Hi OzB,

MyGov has recently rolled out passkey authentication and a few other commercial services are moving to the same.

Besides using the biometrics on a phone or laptop, are there consumer grade hardware (usb c) passkey devices that you would recommend?

    +1 for Yubikey

You can use it with a lot of different services. Check out the Works with Yubikey page

  • Just got a yubikey from work which can be used for our other things as well - I'm still confused on whether yubikey is also a passkey - seems in a way they are though.

    • Well passkeys and yubikey both implement the FIDO2 standard. They can both be used as a 2nd factor for authentication in the same way.

  • Yubi key it is. Thanks all!

make sure when you buy one it has firmware 5.7 because you cannot upgrade the firmware yourself.

      • Great point. Thanks!
I see they have one reseller in Aus. Amazon UK also stocks them.

  • do you use password managers?

most are rolling out passkey implementations.

I used bitwarden and enrolled the keys to bitwarden vault.

    • Yes, currently with proton pass. Will have a look at passkey support.

      • Proton Pass suports passkeys. Just not on the version on Android kn my phone.

Good thing I plan to upgrade this year.
