Best Place to Buy Yen Cash

It just keep getting better! as per today, 1 AUD = 108 Yen!!

Been looking at different currency exchange place but, as usual, they keep the rate as low as possible. The best one I see was 1AUD=102Yen but minimum is 2000AUD.

Anyone knows other place that offer great rate to exchange for cash?

  • Try the dodgy shops on Elizabeth st.

  • alternative is to trade on revolut/wise and withdraw with atm

    • any fee to withdraw in atm using those cards?

      • There is a rather small limit youcan withdraw before fees kick in

Better to use them to convert to yen and just use up the balance when paying with card

I went earlier this year, took a few hundred in yen with me to get started and the rest either paid with card or withdrew there for the better rate.

I only have currency exchange suggestions for melb not syd

      • Free accounts can withdraw $350 for free. (Wise has first card delivery fee)

If you’re going Japan, you can just top up your suica on iPhone. Suica is an accepted payment method in many places but there’s a 20k yen limit which you can bypass by splitting the transaction if possible.

  • I don't know what purpose you're after.

But if it's for travel, I'd suggest just doing it in Japan at the time via an ATM/a normal debit card like UP. When I was checking on their website the exchange rate they were offering was 108.42 for 1 AUD.

    • for travel.

The trip is not until next year, thought I would buy a bit to use it next year

Stick your cash in a savings account and earn a few percent interest instead, then get it at lowest cost when you're there.

That way you benefit if the aussie dollar continues to improve, don't lose as much if the aussie dollar falls.

Pre-purchasing currency is essentially forex gambling

    1AUD=102Yen but minimum is 2000AUD.

    Except you're already down 5.5%

  • I used these guys last week for currency for Europe trip. Best rates I’ve seen and no real minimum amount but based in Melbourne. Looks like they can send you money for $10 postage, but may not be worth it based on amount you want to transfer

    Current rate is 106.2 Yen

  • does anyone know where to sell USD cash in Sydney? ive tried that KVB a few times but they keep saying no

  • If you’ve got an iPhone, you can load up ¥20,000 (~$185) onto a Suica card in Apple Wallet. Use an international fee free credit/debit card.

It’s not cash, but Suica can be used in many places that you would need to pay in cash because they don’t take oz cards, like as a transport ticket, to buy things from vending machines and some shops.

  • Try HAI HA if you are in Melbourne

  • I just top up on Wise and cash out at ATM's in JPN, generally at Japan Post ATM's rather than 7/11. Currently converting 108.3JPY to the AUD.

  • I exchanged some at United Currency Exchange in Haymarket last November as they had pretty good rates at the time. And I exchanged the majority in Japan.

  • I use Wise. WIll be cashing out in JP when I head there. 108.2 at the moment.

I figured if it goes any higher, i'll just mainly use CC at the higher rate, if it goes lower, i'll just use mainly the cash I have now.
