I've cancelled Amazon Prime.
In the past, with Subscribe & Save, they shipped free without me having Prime.
Will this be the case in the future too? Is this a flaw in the design?

That has always been the case, subsequent sub & save deliveries have free shipping without prime.
With Subscribe & Save, you'll enjoy free standard shipping on auto-deliveries (non-Prime customers may incur shipping costs for the first delivery).
Although it doesn't explicitly state it on the AU site anymore, so it could change at any time.
I am having Déjà vu reading the OP.
Who really knows if past performance is an indicator of future performance.
