Quick Question Re DDR5 Speed Compatibility with i5 12400F

Hi

Hopefully a quick question re DDR5 speed compatibility with an i5 12400F. Will DDR5 with speed above 4800MHz work in my new set up?

I'm building a new gaming PC, but when I went to pick up the components the guy in the store said RAM wasn't compatible with the CPU; so I left the store without the RAM. Now I'm home and have had a chance to do a bit of googling it seems that up to 6000MHz DDR5 will work and there isn't a lot of 4800 speed RAM options. Would 6000MHz DDR5 be an option, or do I have to find 4800MHz RAM?

Build:
- Intel Core i5 12400F 6 Core LGA 1700 CPU Processor (PROBABLY LOOK TO UPGRADE THIS CPU NEXT YEAR - If I find any OzBargain replacements)
- Corsair Vengeance RGB 32GB (2x16GB) 6200MHz CL36 DDR5 RAM
- Samsung 990 Evo 1TB M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe SSD
- MSI B760M Gaming Plus WiFi LGA 1700 mATX
- MSI 750W MAG A750GL 80+ Gold PCIe 5 ATX 3.0
- Corsair 4000D Airflow TG Mid Tower ATX Case

GPU is still to be decided on. Can't rush these decisions :)

Thanks in advance!

you can always run faster ram and slower speeds

    • Awesome thanks for your help!

Thanks for your help. I actually tested compatibility on this before I ordered. I just assume the guy in the store new better. :(

My advice, check the QVL list for the motherboard if you want to be more sure of running the RAM at that speed. That particular RAM might not work at that speed, but others could.

    • Yeah QVL is the way to go.

    • Thanks.
The dude in the store said the issue was with the CPU and was for all i5s. I have just checked using the system builder at www.corsair.com and that came up with no compatibility issues. I will see if I can find the QVL for this board to triple check.

  • lol I run a newer processor on ddr4

  • short answer: will work, good chance even in XMP speed.

    long answer:
Your Mobo have ram speed unlocked (all B660/B760 is unlocked)
your CPU also have unlocked memory speed, but the voltage for memory controller is locked, which limits the maximum capable ram speed, and this is very luck dependent.

Generally speaking 12400 with locked IMC voltage should achieve 6600 without much hassle, so your 6200 speed should be on the safe side.

it's gettnig more complex than before with the mobo/CPU limitations. Clearly the dude in the store know it's complex, but he surely don't have much clue himself either..
