Qantas Carry-on Requirements with Baby

Hi OzBargain Fam,

Will be traveling overseas soon and I have a 9 month baby with me. What are Qantas like with carry-on with a baby?

I plan on bringing the Redsbaby Skip2 travel pram as carry-on. It meets the Qantas weight limit but the Qantas carry-on dimensions are “56cm long + 36cm wide + 23cm deep” whilst the Skip2 pram is “ D 27CM X W 45CM X L 50CM”.

Are Qantas strict with this? All the marketing for the Skip2 say it’s perfect for plane overhead compartments.

Also, Qantas states that “However, for infants (under 2 years), there is no carry-on baggage allowance. Food and nappies required during a flight may be carried in addition to the accompanying adult's carry-on baggage allowance.“

Is it expected that the food and nappies will be in a separate nappy bag? Meaning I can bring the entire nappy bag and it doesn’t count towards the allowance?

In short, this is what the carry on will look like for my family of 3

Person 1: travel pram, nappy bag
Person 2: carry on bag
Baby: just chilling

Will there be any issues with this arrangement?

I think you’ll probably be fine, in my experience they have been accomodating rather than strict.

    • Im hoping this is the case. Cheers.

Qantas could ask you to check in the pram. not necessarily charge you for the additional checked in luggage.

    • +14

Prams can be checked free of charge under the infant policy.

      • +1

Agree with this. Qantas typically require it to be checked for free via the oversize counter.

    • -1

It might be better to send an expensive pram in checked baggage. Otherwise, be prepared for it to be stuffed with other cabin baggage and potentially get damaged.

      • +2

Personally, I'd prefer the stroller in carry on over being checked

  • -3

    Call them

    • +42

The baby will be 10 months old by the time you will actually get to speak to someone.

    • +2

      What generation are you from?

  • +2

So I could get to the boarding gate and they can still force you to check in the luggage? Would you have to go back out to the ticket desk or can they check in the luggage at the gate?

    • +4

      Check it at the gate

    • Some airports have loaners so you dump at the gate

    • If it is a busy flight, it might get gate checked and will be brought back to you when you arrive.

    • +1

Yes, they can ask you to check it at the gate and they’ll tag it there and take it down. If you want it as carry on I’d recommend having it fully folded in its bag and casually slung over your should with a carry strap. But as it’s over the dimensions they can still ask for it to go underneath. It’s annoying as prams do regularly get damaged. I would get a babyzen yo-yo if I had another child for this reason, that and they are super light weight.

    • They drop it out the window

  • +3

They sometime can give you a baggage tag at check-in for the strollers and then check it in at the gate. I'd ask if you can do this as it's much easier than dealing with it in the cabin.

What are Qantas like with carry-on with a baby?

Sorry, they need to be checked in….

They contain more than 100ml of liquid.

  • Bring the carry bag with you, I brought my Joolz aer, a baby bag with food and nappy on Qantas, Virgin and Japan airline last month, all was fine.

  • -3

    Are Qantas strict with this?

    Yes…

Just wrap your pram with a no-brand roll of glad wrap to keep it clean and check it in…

    • +5

Bro you never fail to deliver. Even on a random post like this you still show up

      • +1

post like this you still show up

Happened to us a while back on Jetstar.

Had to check in the stroller.

        • +4

Did that mean you had to walk instead?

          • +1

@freefall101: No my son did, to his annoyance…

            • @jv: hell hath no fury like a woman scorned a toddler made to do something they don't want to do.

You don't average ~50 posts a day by not throwing multiple garbage posts at the wall and seeing what sticks

        • +1

          50 posts a day

          That's slack, only about 2 per hour…

  • Baby: just chilling

    I hope so.

Why do you want a stroller on the plane?

    • +3

      For strolling

    • +3

Because typically you cannot go from the car to the plane without having to traipse through the airport first.

      • You check it in after you enter the airport…

      • I mean in the cabin.

        • People don’t want their pram damaged when it goes underneath as it’s expensive and you generally need it functional at the destination.

    • It can be useful going through the airport on both ends. All but one flight on a recent trip just had us put the stroller in overhead.

    • Why wouldn't you? Do you want to be carrying a baby the entire time before you board? Or exiting the airport at the other end and going through customs etc? If you have carry on only it is extra handy, after leaving the plane whack the baby in the pram and off you go.

  • I just took my travel pram onto a Qantas flight. There was also a guy who brought his car baby seat onto the flight so yeah you’ll be fine

  • Had a pram we thought was carry on-able be checked at the gate before
Since bought a pram that is absolutely carry-on-able and has been fine to go in overhead. May depend on the people on the day, looked like the dimensions you gave it might be slightly too big? Could be ok, hard to know

  • If other long-haul passengers are anything to go by, you'll be fine. People bring so much crap as carry on for international flights that I raise my eyebrows and wonder how it's all going to fit in the overhead bins.

  • -2

You could maybe do other passengers a favour and also check-in bubs to travel in the aircraft hold.

    • In my nearly 40 years of flying, adults are way worse than babies.

      • You must travel with ear plugs?

        • Sometimes. They don't do much for the BO/smoker/meth smells or the foot encroachment of other adults though.

    • -1

You could do us all a favour and check-in to the euthanasia clinic

  • We went about a year ago when little one was 3 months, international Qantas with the Yoyo, they never checked dimensions or weight. They allowed up to 3 check-in items for the infant alone, and we ended up taking a whole backpack and the travel pram onboard for the infant. Same experience for 2 more Qantas international trips over the last year too.

I suspect the biggest issue you will face will be getting baby to agree to:

    just chilling

Other than that, seems a solid plan.

Was I the only one that came here for the answer to whether a baby counts as carry on?

  • +1

Provided your baby isn't too heavy, you won't be required to check it in.

  • +1

I have a Redsbaby Skip pram as well and have flown on multiple destinations (domestic and international) with Qantas. There is no issue at all with what you mentioned above (pram and the nappy bag). The luggage compartment size is enough for the pram. They will just ask you to fold and put the pram inside the bag during boarding.

Also on some occasions, we could hand over the pram to the crew right before you enter the plane so they'll store it elsewhere. And then when you've arrived, when you're exiting the plane, the pram would be ready there.

If you can get the seat with a bassinet, that would also help a lot.

Hope you have a wonderful trip!

    • Awesome. How did you find taking the Skip abroad? Thanks!

  • I've flown Qantas twice overseas with a new born, they were fairly accommodating with the nappy bag. In both instance i didn't have a separate nappy bag and i just combined it with my adult carry-on. Also security checks at Sydney airport was lenient regarding the puree pouches and milk powder i had in my carry on. My general strategy was to minimise the number of bags to handle and remember to order infant meals when you checkin as they also provide puree packs.

My only gripe with Qantas is that you need to pay extra for exit row seat with bassinet, i didn't need to pay extra with Cathay Pacific.

  • travelled with emirates last year with a 1 and 3 yo to europe we just checked in the pram (we brought a full size pram with us) it's a lot easier with just one, a 9 month old, but id suggest you want to be holding as little as possible. bring a carrier and just carry your 9 month old if you have a stop over. if its a shorter flight you land and have your pram there in the oversized luggage pick up anyway

  • +2

You’ll be fine. We have taken our Skip pram on Fiji Airways, BA, Vueling, Singapore Airlines, Qantas, Virgin, Jetstar & never been asked once to check it. Personally, I wouldn't either as there is a high chance of it being damaged during loading / unloading from the hold. They may ask to see the bag at check in to confirm it is cabin size but you will have no issues with taking it onboard.
Best tip is, one parent boards early with luggage, pram etc to guarantee locker space & organise etc. Second parent stays in terminal with baby until last call. This saves a good 30mins of sitting on the aircraft with all the noise / mayhem of boarding & a upset baby.
Airlines are very leanant with baggage when travelling with babies so don't stress, you will have no issues. You can also carry bottled water through Security with no issues.

  • That'll be fine. Worst case they'll check the pram at the gate and give it to you when you hop off the plane

  • You should be fine assuming that you are travelling on a 737/A320 size aircraft. I bring my babyzen yoyo and they will always ask at the check in counter if you are checking it in or bringing it aboard and I tell them it is a carry on pram and they dont question it. The only time I have had issue is flying on an Embraer E190 as the overhead bins are slightly smaller than the usual bins you find on the larger aircraft. So usually it goes under the seat but there have been a few times where I've been given grief about it or they flat out won't let me bring it on board at the check in gate. Once I am actually at the aircraft the staff could care less as I've basically got the pram folded up already and it's about the size of a wider carry on luggage. Some of the staff have even offered to put it in the business class bins so that if fits better.

  • You will be fine. Don't check the pram in at the check in counter. If they need you to check it in, it will happen at the gate - they will take it straight down from there. If this happens they will then bring it up to you again when you leave the aircraft you don't have to wait for it at the luggage carousel.

Good luck, travelling with a kid is sometimes a challenge. But travelling with one is so, so very much easier than travelling with a number of kids that outnumbers the adults….

  • +1

They're usually super accommodating with little ones. We have flown with a number of carriers and they have never asked about our cabin baggage though have always checked in our stroller. We instead used a baby carrier though the airport which works well.

  • 'Baby: Just chilling': Source? As much as I wish you are right, please do allow for the worst and your trip will only be better than you planned for.

  • You will need a cover for your pram.
sometimes, they may provide you a plastic cover - often not.

they have a list of prams that they know will fit into overhead comportment - but usually accomodate if the pram looks like it could fit or was marketed as such.

you will be able to bring an extra 10kg bag full of formula/milk/nappies/clothes for the baby.

    no extra checkin baggage allowance.

you will have to wear a special seatbelt with the baby during takeoff, landing and turbulence.
some companies are more strict than others on turbulence and removal of baby from bassinet.. (China Southern doesn't enforce it much, Etihad does consistently)

Try to time milk bottles for takeoff/landing to help with pressure equalisation (sucking on bottle / moving jaws will help with ear drum pain)

i can also recommend a small music box and a small "tent" to cover the bassinet so they can sleep in total darkness..
we used [Cozigo Sleep Easy Cover] .. baby slept 6+ hour straight on china southern lol

try benefiting from facilities, priority checkin, priority boarding, priority security checks, family rooms

  • We flew qantas to nz with an infant.

They were very good about it and didn't check the pram.
We were able to check on a toddler bed too and we were able to carry on another bag just for our infant

From what I remember the travel pram is part of the baby's crap and not yours so you should be fine

    https://www.qantas.com/au/en/travel-info/children/parent-inf…

Isn't this implying that and infant has the same baggage as an adult + stroller?

  • Save some money on the pram, we used this extensively on our 2 month trip in Europe on cobbled roads, sand and everything. Can put it into overhead luggage and under 7 kg. The front handle bar is removable when you need to put it into overhead luggage.

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Lightweight-Baby-Stroller-Adjustab…

Also for baby, you can checki-in 3 items: a collapsible stroller or push-chair, collapsible cot or bassinet; car seat or baby capsule

  • Can confirm Qantas do not permit the baby to be stored in the overhead storage compartments.

  • I wont worry too much. You will probably be using the pram all the way up to the overpass to the cabin entrance and no Qantas staff will be taking a tape measure to your pram. However, if it cant actually fit in the overhead, they will ask to put it into check in luggage and you will loose access to it until you collect baggage when you disembark. On the nappy and baby stuff, Its probably easier for yourself to have that packed separately and carried in its own bag (we have many times and they have never counted that as carry on for us). Also if your baby is bottle feed, you can have water in those bottles even if they are larger than 100mls and they will let you pass.
