This is for where you redeem your amex points for gift cards. Those with Qantas/Velocity amex cards aren't eligible as their points get transferred directly across.

So what's the best way to use points?
Transfer to an airline partner and use for a first/business class redemption seat. Sure it's not everyones cup of tea but if you can snag a business class ticket from Sydney to Singapore on Kirsflyer for 68.5k SQ miles which is 205.5k amex points a ticket that usually retails for $3264 one way you're essentially getting a value of 1.5c per amex point (I'm factoring out the taxes here which is about $150 on this route).
Compare this to a $1050 Amazon gift card (including the bonus) for 200,000 Amex points which is only a value 0.53c per amex point.
Now that's a good public service announcement.
