Samsung Galaxy A55 Users - How Bad Is The Fingerprint Reader?

Users of a Samsung A55: in your experience how bad is the issue with the fingerprint reader and does it affect your day-to-day use of the phone?

Currently have one sitting boxed up and trying to decide if I want to open it or sell it on. There seems to be a lot to like about the phone, but coming from a Mi9t the extra weight and fingerprint reader issue are giving me pause.

If I don't keep it I'm getting a Moto G84 instead. Thoughts?

      What's the issue?

Quite a few complaints about the fingerprint sensor being unreliable

There's always the face unlock which may even be faster than the fingerprint sensor but of course less secure

      • Do you have to use one or the other for everything? Or can you pick specific unlock options for specific apps?

Thanks for reminding me about face unlock - I never use it as the Mi9t has to pop up the selfie camera first, which is way too slow to use for biometric unlock.

Apps will generally ask for biometric unlock, of which face unlock doesn't count (I may be wrong on this, this is at-least the case for my S21+), therefore you'll need to use your fingerprint to unlock ie. your bank app. YMMV but I expect it to be similar since both our devices are running the latest OneUI 6.1. Hope that helps.

@CrispyChrispy: I can confirm this. Finger print is required for biometric unlock because the face unlock is not secure at all, you can unlock your phone with a picture of your face even on the latest S24 ultra. I put important apps that doesn't have biometric authentication inside the secure folder on my Samsung phone because of this.

Pity Samsung did away with the fingerprint reader on the power button - that was great ergonomics.

Register the same finger multiple times.

Works like a charm (albeit I'm on S24U)

    • working like a charm on their latest highest end flagship phone doesn't mean it'll work the same as their third-tier mid range phone

yes, hence the "albeit I'm on S24U"

        • Ah okay, I didn't know what albeit means

    • Thanks, will have to try that - so register the same fingerprint as multiple finger entries? Or does it record multiple "snapshots" for the same finger entry? (hope that makes sense?!)

      • I do this on my Mi9T.
I have my left thumb and my right Index each registered twice as "different fingers" and my right thumb as the final finger.
I don't find the Mi 9T through screen fingerprint reader to be all that reliable despite this.

        • My current Mi9T used to drive me nuts until I took off the glass screen protector I used for years. Now it picks it up every time

          • @mad__llama: I've never had a screen protector, and without the duplicate prints I was authenticating only about 1 in 4 times.

            • @ESEMCE: Yikes. OK mine is definitely more reliable than that…

    I had a A52 and now A54, been great.

    • Cheers, yeah the A5x series seems to offer a lot of value but it it looks like the fingerprint reader issue is specific to the A55?

I got my A55 during EOFYS for a great deal. haven't had any major problems with the fingerprint reader.

I actually prefer their mid tier fingerprint sensors (optical sensor) over the ultrasonic sensors found in their higher end phones as I can use a glass screen protector. Just re-register your fingerprints after installing the screen protector. My sister has an S23 and she can't use a screen protector on her's.

But YMMV, I don't typically have dry skin or soiled fingers. Maybe think about your occupation and such before you decide.

    • Awesome, thanks for your reply.
Still have mine sitting sealed in the box and I guess now I'm opening it!

  • So… after months of procrastinating I've finally opened and started using my A55. Apart from AzzaAzza's helpful comment above I really wasn't able to find any other casual user opinion on the fingerprint reader specifically for the A55 (i.e. one not from a reviewer who tries every phone available on the market and would get very annoyed with a slightly under-performing feature).
So for anyone else looking for another casual user's view: it's fine. I haven't noticed any worse performance than my Mi9t or any other phone I've used in the past. One caveat: I'm not using a screen protector yet, and maybe that will make a major difference once fitted but hopefully not. I did follow some of the advice above and added each finger multiple times so maybe that helps too?
    So far so good…
