Only two weeks after its launch the entry petrol version of the MG3 Excite has been reduced ~$1,300 down to $24,990 national drive away. The Essence has also been reduced to $26,990.

@HolyCr4p: That was an old platform, this is a brand new model (the old one was first released in like 2011 in China). Price jacked as they needed to update heavily for new safety standards

No matter how you look at it, it's still a Chinese car. It's not about image but proven track records needed to win consumer sentiments.

Then you haven't checked the sales figures, from memory MG was about #7 for the best selling car brands in Australia for 2023. Though the MG3 is crap and does nothing good for the brand, the ZS is average and the ZST/HS are actually great cars for the money in petrol. Have not driven the EV variants yet.
MG4 EV is selling very well in Australian market, compared to other similar small EVs such as BYD Dolphin and GWM Ora.

I agree. Using it currently as a rental car (didn't chose it). Probably goes to 100kmph (if it does) in like 30sec or longer. Reverse camera is shit as well (nearly bumped into a pole following it). Will report back on other features soon..

good deal maybe, but the MG3 rental i had was the worst car i have ever driven.
Ditto, wipers weren't working except on max and it was completely gutless when faced with an incline.

New Swift Hybrid from $24,500 driveaway is much better. Most reviews found real world fuel economy close to claimed.

Wouldn't be surprised to see this variant dip below $20k or get axed entirely. Gutless wonder. The hybrid is apparently quite impressive (notwithstanding the baffling decision not to have a split folding rear seat).
Though updated, there is so much better competition at or close to this price … Suzuki Swift, Kia Stonic, Hyundai Venue or a used car from a class above.

Negging because this car shouldn't be offered for sale new in Australia in 2024, and thus isn't a deal. It's genuinely unsafe, and poorly built to the point where it will likely be in a wreckers yard in under a decade - a massive waste of resources that should have gone into a car that doesn't feel like a sardine tin with wheels. Put your 25k into pretty much anything else.
One advantage of having low priced cars is that it forces in some part other car manufacturers to drop their prices. In a way it is competition. We have been ripped off enough by car manufacturers and dealers since COVID, so anything to bring prices down is welcomed.

NGL though the car isn't "genuinely unsafe" it just doesn't have the modern lane control and crash avoidance technology that more expensive cars have. It's more ANCAP mandating the requirement for autonomous emergency braking amongst other safety "controls" that you'll end up turning off as soon as you get the car as they're more distracting than helpful.
I have my fully kitted out LDV with every safety feature under the sun and the multitude of warnings from sensors, blind spot monitoring, collision avoidance is more distracting than actually being able to drive the car without them. Meanwhile ANCAP sits there and asks for more monitoring and warnings… Quite stupid really.
FWIW though the car is mechanically poor and really you'd be better off with an older Toyota.
Took my son to the dealers to try the old model as I figured for a first car you couldn't go wrong with 7 years warranty .

He didn't buy it , It was awful to drive .
That was less than 2 years ago and they were 18 or 19k drive away then . Even at that it seemed poor value .

When you need to overtake on a freeway then you lose the hybrid power half way and retreat the failed overtake. Unsafe.

A quick glance at the specifications says the electric motor is rated at 100kW. The 1.5L petrol engine is rated at 75kW.
The battery is quite small at only 1.8kWh, so it can only support the electric motor's maximum output for about 65 seconds when fully charged.
It's not clear how the hybrid drivetrain works - whether the petrol motor only serves as a generator, or if it has its own connection to the wheels.
This deal is for the petrol version. The hybrid is ~$5k more expensive.
When this car launched they invited influencers to promote it all over thier socials and gave them a goodie bag of freebies to win them over. Yikes steer clear. Do not touch with a 10 ft pole. Swift is 100x times better and will last longer.

I've seen a VW Golf, an Amarok and an Audi A3 need major, expensive repairs in the past 3 weeks. The Amarok had the cheapest repair at $7k for a major clutch and transmission fix, and the Audi needed a complete replacement engine.
I heard many stories of Audi, and VW under 5 years have sudden engine blow and transmission problems. Even my mechanic saw a lot of his customers’ new Audis broke down unexpectedly. He even advised that one should have a back up car if they are going to buy an Audi, VW, or even BMW.
Merc is not much better. My old man’s Merc was laden with electrical problems only after a couple of months on the road and resulted in an accident as it suddenly stopped on a freeway.

Poor people don't leave their car on the side of the road or pull out their tools on the side of the freeway. The tow truck comes and they get in a taxi and continue on their day.
I will add, German cars have average reliability, better than the cars we used to make in Australia, not as good as something made in Japan. If you speak to people they act as if a German car and a Fiat are equivalent.

I understood that the old generation of the MG3 was a piece of crap, but this new MG3 looks more premium and has better build quality. It came out not long ago. Have people test-driven or owned one to have a fair view of this new generation MG3?
For a 6k price price hike, very bad market positioning any way..
