Qantas "Flex" Ticket Refund Terms (Fare Difference)

Hi all, the Qantas website says the terms for cancellations on the "flex" ticket are

The refund will be the difference (if any) between the fare paid and the applicable fare for the journey travelled

When making a booking and you go to the fare selection type page, it shows that there is no fee for cancellations when booking the flex type ticket. So, I don't understand what the term above means.

Can someone please help clarify?

For example:

  • I book a one-way ticket today and the price is $500
  • Then in 3 months from now the price drops to $450
  • Then I cancel the booking (before the journey commences).

Does that mean they will only refund me $450 instead of $500? because that is the "current" price?

Thank you.

  • Where are you seeing that term? I have found it on some of the international options, where the clause appears under "Cancellation" and the "After departure" sub-section. This seems to me to be relevant for partially-flown ("travelled") tickets, so not really relevant for your one-way example, but more for people who may have booked a return ticket, flown part of the ticket, and decide not to fly the return journey.

    • hey mate, i saw it here

      https://www.qantas.com/au/en/book-a-trip/flights/fare-types/…

then change fare type to flex and expand the cancellation section.

i changed the destination to Japan instead of Asia and you're right, the wording is slightly different. looks like they didn't standardise it across the pages. on the Japan page it says

      Before departure: Full refund.

After departure: The refund will be the difference (if any) between the fare paid and the applicable fare for the journey travelled.

now that makes sense to me, regarding those with return tickets and maybe only travelled the first leg so they get a partial refund for the second leg.

      cheers!

I book a one-way ticket today and the price is $500 AUD
then in 3 months from now the price drops to $450
then i cancel the booking (before the journey commences).

In this example, you would have to do a full cancel/refund to get $500 back and book again @ $450.

But you'll have to cover both fares while you wait forever for the refund.

  • You really should run your scenario past Qantas. There are always hidden fees with changes & cancellations.

Hey there, yes you can absolutely cancel and receive a full refund in your scenario.

"The refund will be the difference (if any) between the fare paid and the applicable fare for the journey travelled" - refers to a cancellation after you have started your journey and have used sectors.

Refunds take approx 6 weeks so you will need to pay for both fares in the mean time.
