Can I Turn a Dell S3422DWG Monitor into Portrait Mode

Hi, is it possible to put a Dell S3422DWG Monitor into Portrait Mode?

I'm not quite computer illiterate & have gone into display settings but when I try to change from Landscape to Portrait it won't allow me to do it under any circumstances. It just keeps telling me to choose another preference.

Am I doing something wrong? Is there actually a way to change it to Portrait?

Thank you.

  • From the User's Guide.

Easy Arrange layouts for portrait mode
Portrait mode Easy Arrange icons are presented when monitor is rotated.

    • I have 2 monitors in Portrait stance but the screens are landscaped… It just won't change no matter what settings I try

    • I will check again though… Thank you

    • So I have also downloaded Dell Display Manager… It gives me the option on each monitor for orientation… When I hit Portrait… The program just switches off & nothing happens ???

  • I'm curious, so had a look here
    https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-au/000186818/dell-s342…

    Seems to be some contradiction……

Dell S3422DWG monitor orientation must always be in landscape mode. This includes any wall-mounted monitors and monitors on a stand. In a multiple monitor setup, Dell S3422DWG should not be rotated either to 180° (landscape) or 90° (portrait).
Caution: Dell S3422DWG setup must comply to the recommended panel orientation and working angle only. Setting up the monitor in an orientation that is not recommended may damage the monitor and/or cause a safety hazard.
When setting up your Dell S3422DWG monitor, ensure that the monitor front panel buttons is on the bottom right.

    • Yes I read that too so am unsure now… I would find it strange if you couldn't

Just spoke with a Dell representative & he informed me that this monitor does NOT support Portrait mode … That's crap but it is what it is…

        Probably my cousin.

I just tested with my non-Dell monitor and it let me rotate within the display settings.

I thought it was an image output thing rather than a hardware thing.

Are you able use that setting flip for other monitors?

Changing it in Windows Settings is just an image output thing.

But for this model screen Dell doesn't want users to rotate the panel itself. Presumably its to do with convection cooling or something like that.

    • Unfortunately I don't have any other monitors here I can test…

But tried windows settings, Dell Display Settings & neither worked even though both gave me the option to flip, it failed…

      NO

  • With a monitor this size (and curved) I am having trouble working out a usage that would require it being in portrait mode. Long spreadsheets?
OP what were you intending to use it for in that orientation? (just curious - not critical)

Ah it's curved. I was really surprised that a monitor can't be rotated, but I didn't consider a curved one.
I still don't see the technical limitation, but I also don't see the use case.

  • I already had two of these monitors double stacked & purchased a third… Had them setup in a tie fighter style… Thats the old nerd in me

I work from home full time & like numerous pages & applications open at once…

I fully get the reasons (I have a similar setup with 3x 27" flat monitors) - I'm more wondering how a large curved monitor looks with a vertical curve?

I keep considering getting 2x 34" curved monitors and stacking them as a replacement but can't really justify the expense right now. Also, haven't convinced myself that I would not be losing usable space and I occassionally turn them all to landscape for a bit of racing sim.

    • As I already had two I just decided to get another one the same… I read in the user manual that it could be done (also shown by BOGOF in previous answers) so went ahead & purchased the third one but once I tried it just didn't work…

I had it all set up & was excited to get it going & really enjoyed the look but alas it's just not possible…

It was 1 day out of the return policy but Dell are still letting me return it for a full refund…

I either stick to the dual stack or go the 49" Ultrawide… Unsure at the moment
