Insurance Confusion - at Fault Accident - Not Contacted by Any Insurance Company for The Damage Caused

Hello all, my partner had a car accident about three months ago and was at fault.

Both drivers were insured and details were exchanged on the spot. We believe the other driver made a claim with their insurance company right away. We also don't think damage to their car was significant.

However, we have not heard anything from either insurance companies since then regarding the damage caused. We're obviously not complaining if nobody is going to charge us!

But keen to get your thoughts on what might be going on, or what to expect.

Thanks

      Yes
And if OP doesnt quite get that

      KEEP QUIET AND MOVE ON!

Did OP consider the other driver is thinking the same thing???

details were exchanged on the spot.

Did your partner provide false details

    • +1

I can confirm the correct details were provided, haha. Phone numbers were exchanged and we even go in touch with the other driver via text who confirmed a claim had been lodged with their insurance.

That happened to me back when i was at uni. Was adjusting the bluetooth radio thing and my peripherals saw the light turn green, but the first car apparently didnt and i bumped into him. his whole back bumper paint flaked off . dad asked him to meet us at uni so we could give him cash, and he stood my dad up looool. Wouldnt answer his text. happy days. thinking about it , he was probably an international student or didnt have a proper license.

Well he probably didn't have his own dad around to send to the meeting, so he chickened out.

      • My dad was there just to give him some cash 😂 not like we could ambush him in a public carpark

Is it possible the other party didn't know they weren't at fault? Or maybe they were out cheating on their partner and just repaired their car with cash to not have a paper trail. Or they are a Russian spy and didn't want attention brought to themselves.

  • Did you claim for your damage?

    • 3rd party only for us unfortunately

  • There is a possibility that they thought they were insured and found out the hard way that their policy had expired.

    • +1

      How is that a possibility?

we even go in touch with the other driver via text who confirmed a claim had been lodged with their insurance.

        How is that a possibility?

The person Lodged an online claim, got an email back stating their insurance had lapsed.

Or as i was editing in:
        License lapsed, regos lapsed.
        Few reasons it could be.

  • Too many spelling and grammar mistakes in the post

Was it a bit hard for you to understand, Billy?

      • OP has edited and corrected them all

    • Surely autocorrect would have fixed them up. Who doesn't use it in 2024? FFS.

Edit: thanks baysew for the power edits.

My autocorrect seems pretty much useless. Im sure it does correct a fair bit, but i still get lots of errors and a lot of autocorrect changing the word to something i dont want 3 times in a in a row despite using the word i DO want frequently.

        • I've noticed I don't have any autocorrect at all on this website… I just went off to check on other websites - I don't think Chrome has autocorrect any more??

      • I had to turn mine off because it kept correcting correctly spelled English words to Vietnamese even while I'm on the English keyboard.

Could well be taking a while for the other car to be repaired, you won't get a bill until it is. Buddy of mine works at a panel beater, and plenty of people with non urgent damage taking 6 months to get in for repairs currently

    • Unlikely that the repair itself could take ages. Very minor damage to the bumper imo

Just because it looks like minor damage to the bumper doesn’t mean there isn’t significant damage underneath.

      • I got booked in for a quote only. 3 weeks just for that since lodging the claim. No idea how long I’ll have to wait to get in for the repair. NSW CC.

Insurance can take months or years to pan out. 3 Months is nothing.

    • +3

Yup. Got a call only a fortnight ago about an accident in March last year.

Thank you both, these were the answers I was looking for. We’d expect to hear from them at some point then.

Could be taking a while to take it in if it was very minor. Ages ago someone ran up the back of me. Was minor damage but it was a brand new car…. Ended up having a recall on it about 4 months later, so while it was at the dealer, I asked if there was someone they recommended to fix my bumper (I had choice of repairer). They said yep we can send it to our panel place and get it fixed. Confirmed with my insurer they were good with the price and job done. Based on the texts I got the person who hit me wasn’t very happy I went to the dealer not a main street repairer.

Anyway point is, if it was minor they could be waiting for a time where they can deal with not having the car for a few days or weeks. I think you have something like 2 years to lodge the claim.

Possibly due to the backlog with crash repairers. 3-6 months for minor repairs is the norm here is SA.

my car was just returned after 6 weeks in the shop (needed a front bumper, left headlight, and left CV/steering arm thing) - Brisbane
