Buying Tickets to Super Nintendo World Universal Studios Osaka

Hi everyone, I am planning on travelling to Japan with my partner this year.

I have never planned an overseas trip before so I'm having some trouble understanding the ticket process for going to see Super Nintendo World in Universal Studios in Osaka Japan. I have read a few reddit posts which seems to provide conflicting advice. Just for context, we don't really care about the rest of the park.

Basically, TLDR: Is it worth buying the express pass or early entry for Super Nintendo World if you're planning on arriving to the park 1.5 hrs before opening time?

Follow up questions: Will we be able to see everything in SNW? Which website did you use? What was your personal experience?

Was there last fortnight, no express pass, arrived 1230pm and managed to booked 630pm entry for 13 people. Just go straight to the booking thing when you arrived to scan your ticket. I think the hype with this slows down same with Fantasy Spring. It was a great experience though. Really great. You will realised how boring/lame is the theme parks at Gold Coast lol.

PS: Go straight to Yoshi ride.

      A bit late?

That was the earliest slot for us available because we arrived around 1230?lol Actually, the actual place was really beautiful when ALL the lights are on, the moment you see the location upon entering just gave us goosebumps. 5-6 hours waiting is nothing, so much to see. We spent most of the time at Elmo Town, this kids area is unbelievable.

    • This! Don't bother pre-purchase. They're tricking you. The moment you enter the park (past the turnstile), pull up your USJ apps and book for the entry pass. I got in at 3.30pm so was still day light and during the night, the area looks beautiful.

Went there in December 2023 and managed to book for 3pm entry for 3 pax on a Wednesday (least crowded day of the week). But my friend wasnt so lucky.
The trick is to log in to their app as soon as you pass the gate and book immediately. if unsure you can ask the staff and they can help.
Super nintendo world is amazing and is the highlight of our trip.

It is different now, you have to go to a certain location where you need to scan your entry pass and choose availability. I agree how amazing this place is, would do it all over again.

    Two options:

    • Buy entry ticket to Universal, can either be directly on their website or on klook, park says it opens at 9 but reality is normally like 7:30-8, if you're there at that time depending on the day you normally can walk straight into super nintendo world before they close it off due to full capacity. After this point you have to start booking a slot (we used the app to book a slot to come back in later in the day, but looks like now you have to go to a location to scan your pass to book). The time slots I noticed progressed throughout the day so at 8am the earliest you could book was 9:30am and as it filled up it went to later and later in the day at 11am it might be 2pm, depends on how busy the day is.

    • Both their website and klook also offer express passes which is timed entry package to multiple rides with a universal ticket, they normally stipulate what hours the entry will be for each ride for that given day if you buy these package options, the universal website normally gives you better timed options than klook - if you have timed entry to a ride it guarantees you entry to super nintendo world for that ride at that time and you can then stay as long as you want afterwards, once you leave you can't come back in unless you have a timed entry ticket that was booked from option 1 or another ride in that area later in the day as part of your express pass.

We went at opening (~7:45 on this particular day) and the line for Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge was 1.5 hours, people are a bit cooked and run from the front gates. Express pass would just give you a designated time and you shouldn't have to wait more than 20 minutes whereas option 1 - timed entry gets you into the world but does not fast track you through the rides, average waiting time (depends on the day) for bowser and the yoshi one can be ~2 hours each. Rest of the experiences around the world had 10-20 minute waits from what I saw + you have to buy the 5000 yen mario/luigi watch to interact with them. Toads cafe had no line when we went but later in the day at peak lunch you will have to wait.

  • Something important to consider is that Super Nintendo World (at USJ) is expanding to a new 'Donkey Kong Country' area in the "2nd half of 2024". It's recently been delayed, because it was supposed to open earlier this year - see this notice.

This is important because if you're going to be attending USJ after the opening of 'Donkey Kong Country', the park is going to be absolutely packed. There are a lot of locals who have yearly passes who will flock to the park when it opens, not to mention tourists who will organise travel just to go see it.

So take this into account because it may invalidate some of the advice people are giving here. For one, it's certainly going to make it much harder to get timed entry passes, because everyone's going to be gunning for them.

  • I was at USJ in March and arrived at the line for the gates at around 8am (for a 9am opening time). We were in the park pretty much at 9 where I logged onto the app and was able to book Super Nintendo World for 12:30. That was for a family of 5. Tip though - add all of your tickets to the app before getting there.

Super Nintendo World is rather small and other than doing the coin collecting there is only the Mario Kart ride, the Yoshi ride and the Cafe. Mario Kart was good but the Yoshi ride was not worth the 75 minute wait I had with my 6 year old son. I think he enjoyed it, but it only lasts about 90 seconds. We spent about 4 hours there in total I would say, including the cafe time and the kids buying souvenirs after the Mario Kart ride. As a kid that had a NES and grew up with Mario the actual aesthetic was awesome and I do wholeheartedly recommend going.

As we were there in March which is a reasonably busy time (in Japan around the very beginning of cherry blossom season) the tickets for USJ had cost me > $500 but when I looked to get express passes the cheapest ones I could get would have cost an additional $1200 for all 5 of us. I decided that wasn't worth it, especially as I only wanted to guarantee getting into SNW. The process was actually pretty painless - just a shame that the day we went the weather in the morning was terrible and my daughter was feeling ill from food poisoning.

Anyway, enjoy your trip. Japan was amazing. It flew by too fast and we didn't get to see as much as we would have liked, especially of Osaka where we were there for only 2 days. Definitely planning on going back.

  • I went to Super Nintendo World last June. After researching a lot on Reddit, I decided a plan of getting to the park 1.5-2hr before opening time (iirc it was 9am on that specific day). When I arrived I entered one of the queues for entry to the park (make sure to go to the shortest queue for general entry as there is more than one).
Around 45 minutes before normal entry they allowed guests with an early entry through a tour booking into the park. Then in the next 15 minutes they allowed the rest of us into the park.
As i had a 1.5 day pass I had scouted out the park and already knew my way to Super Nintendo World. I along many others proceeded to sprint walk/run to that section of the park, where we were let in without any queues or need for a timed entry.
I straight away went on to the mario kart ride which is the most popular ride in the park and normally has a wait time over 1.5hrs. On the single riders line I was able to get on the ride within 15-20 minutes.
I then got a ticket entry to Kinnopios cafe after lining up for maybe 10 minutes where they gave a ticket and told me to come back around lunch (this was perfect I was able to enjoy the mini games and the yoshi ride in the mean time). I then lined up for Kinnopios cafe with the timed ticket (mind you it still took another 30 minutes from lining up to getting seated). I enjoyed my lunch there then again walked around Super Nintendo World and the various gift shops before leaving to go to other parts of the park.
If you are an early bird and have the patience to wait in line before the park opens, this was perfect.
I saved not only a lot of money but also a lot of time going on the rides as one of the first groups.

Edit. Going early also meant I was able to take pictures at the entrance and front of Super Nintendo World with little to no people in the background also.

Is this still on in September?

    • Is what still on?

  • Also - I'm so sorry everyone for the late reply, but thank you for all your insights! I appreciate your advice. At the moment I am leaning towards two plans:

A - If Donkey Kong opens before we go, I will definitely consider getting the Express pass
B - If Donkey Kong opens after we go, I think I'll stick with purchasing the Studio pass and maybe early entry and getting to the park super early too.

I've set a google alert for when they announce the Donkey Kong expansion so that I keep keep up to date with the news 😄

    • Can you post here when a date is announced? Thanks
