Credit Card Travel Insurance Does It Matter Who's Name Is on The Car Hire or It Just Needs to Be Paid with The Card?

Westpac Platinum Card, underwritten by allianz.

From what I recall, you get travel insurance as long as you pay for the airplane tickets with the credit card.

Do you also need to pay for the rental care hire with the same credit card?

Does the main driver need to be the card holder/person written on the receipt? (Who's name needs to be on the receipt or it doesn't matter if it's paid with the card?)

Or can the cardholder be the additional driver?

Never really used credit card travel insurance as my cards used to only cover up to $2k excess, nowadays it shows $5k

    What does the PDS say?

Level 1 Card and Level 2 Card cardholders are eligible when the entire
payment for the vehicle rental was charged to the accountholder’s
    card account.

it would be faster to look at PDS than write that post

“You better give me the insurance because I am gonna beat the hell out of this thing.”

  • You might want to check the PDS..
Maybe call your credit card company.
    Good luck.

  • I checked the PDS was pretty unclear, as it, said nothing about the name on the invoice at all. Only that we need to present the invoice.

I guess it would be deemed poor service if the hoops were that high and just activation of the travel insurance by purchasing tickets will imply coverage if you are driving a rental car overseas.

I assume in times of ambiguity favour is in our court then.

I emailed the underwritter twice but they never get back to you.

  • You might find the issue is with the car rental company.

You pay them for the damage, then get reimbursed back. If you are not listed driver and have accident, then the excess is higher.

Many policies will limit the excess to a smaller sum.

Remember these are excesses not the full amount of the damage. So you will need some of the car rentals insurance to cover you and these come with their own excess, that you can reduce by paying more per day.

Many free insurance excesses are capped. Eg Allianz with Qudos is capped at $3000 while starting excesses with many Australian car rental cos are around $5000 so that means you will be out of pocket $2000.

Non listed drivers means the excess by the car rental company doesnt apply.

    eg accident $10000.
Car rental charges you $5000 excess
    Travel insurance reimburses $3000
    Your cost $2000

    Unlisted driver
    eg accident $10000.
Car rental charges you $10000 as their excess wont apply
    Travel insurance reimburses $3000
    Your cost $7000

Ensure the driver is listed on the rental agreement. It probably doesn’t have to be the same card but it would help if it is.

If you look at the definition of “you” in the policy it includes spouse and dependants if they are eligible. I would argue spouse is applicable here however I’m not giving legal advice.

Personally we will be taking out rental insurance from a specialist company to ensure everything is covered. Look at the exclusions in the policy.

Always assume any insurance will try to wriggle out of paying any way that they can. So if you think there's a chance they'll use that as an excuse to not pay then just don't give them the excuse.
