Mitsubishi Heavy Industries or Mitsubishi Electric Aircon, Help Me Choose

Looking for some advice here on choosing an aircon.

I need to install a 3.5KW reverse cycle aircon for a bedroom.

I have narrowed the list to either a MHI or ME. Specifically the models below:

ME - MSZ-AP Series MSZ-AP35VG/MUZ-AP35VG

MHI - Avanti - SRK35ZSA-W / DXK12ZSA-W

I am leaning on the MHI Avanti after reading reviews and comparing their product brochures. The MHI seems to be a lot more popular. The ME is also popular as well.

Only concern with the MHI is the common clicking noise that can occur, which MHI is yet to fix in their models. People who have the Avanti model, how has your experience been?

Overall, which brand would you guys recommend?

Thanks.

    Heavy industries.

From what I've heard, MHI is the better brand.

Overall, which brand would you guys recommend?

    Both are great brands.

I have a MHI they have been fine. Family has ME units with the wifi. The wifi add on for the ME is far nicer than the MHI and cheaper too!

  • Always MHI over their normal offerings.

  • I’ve had issues with my MHI units installed 3years ago.
Support from MHI has been slow to resolve issues but no experience with ME to compare.
I’d choose ME based on my experience dealing with MHI support.

    • any details on the issues?

      • When on heating there is constant cracking/popping sound which I’m told is the plastic components expanding and contracting.
Indoor unit was replaced but noise persisted and MHI advised it normal and nothing more they would do.
From what I’ve heard the older MHI units were better but the newer units are cheaply made….. can’t confirm or deny this claim.

        • To be fair, thermal expansion would do that to anything, plastic, metal etc.

What are you expecting form them, especially when they said it's normal (which it is)?

@richadam: I would expect a unit that didn’t make cracking popping sound when on heating. The noise is constant while on heating not something that resolves after a few minutes. The unit makes the noise every 10/15 secs throughout the night….
Doesn’t seem normal to me but fair enough if you think that’s normal.
I’m just giving an opinion on the above units based on my personal experience

@richadam: Other brands only do it when first starting up, even then it's only minimal. Obviously they've cheaped out somewhere.

    • What had the issues been? Most seem to be installer issues.

    • I have the same problem. Not sure if I'd go for ME models.

I acknowledge the consensus on OzB seems to be that MHI is better. I recently asked a mech engineer who does high-rise apartments and he provisions for both Daikin and ME. I asked what he'll be installing in his newly acquired renovator and he said etiher of these, but not MHI. Sorry, I didn't dive any deeper.

    • When I had an aircon guy out last year trying to fix the samsung one that came with the house, he suggested Daikin or ME as well. He was just doing repairs, he didn't sell them and wasn't trying to sell me one, so I figured he was on the level with that advice. I wound up going with MHI for a large one simply because it was significantly cheaper, but it has had noise issues so I probably should have listened to him. I'm looking at two smaller ones at the moment so will go ME, I think.

      • What did you do about the noise issue?

        • Pressed on various bits of plastic until it stopped happening is pretty much it. Not really worth getting someone to look at it, doesn't seem to hamper how it runs (just a small vibration issue, I think)

        he suggested Daikin

Daikin has great kick backs for installers who install lots!!

But at the end of the day, they offer no better warranty than anyone else. For me, they are over rated and costly!

surely there's no incentive for AC guys to recommend units that require frequent service, repair or replacement, or for which they get some kickback

    Both are good brands.
AC brand recommendations are clouded by the cashback component.
Installers will often recommend to source and install a brand based on the cashback they receive and pocket.
Then if the ac works well, you will get “great AC, installer told me this is the brand to pick”
Unless someone on ozbargain installed both brands in the same year, it would be fairly hard to make an objective recommendation.
Like most recommendations on ozbargain, you’ll just the brand I pick is the best one, my decision is the most valid.

    • Don't the customer (me) claim the cashback?

      • You should yes

Both are very reliable. The small Mitsubishi Electric units are almost silent and ideal for a bedroom. I wouldn't risk MHI given the reports of noise.

  • Both are good, I got MHI. I think there is a cashback offer these days.
Check Avanti Plus, which is more efficient

Would you consider Fujitsu? I've heard their customer service is much better than their competitors.

    • +1

Have not heard good things about Fujitsu.

  • I know MHI coats their PCB with resin which is suppose to protect it from critters/geckos.

    Does ME do the same?

  • A former aircon installer here. Recommend MHI first, then Fujitsu. Had the least DOA's with these brands.
