    Is this cost effective?

    • +13

      No

    • +7

Buying points is never cost effective unless you need a top-up to buy flights almost right now and can't wait to accumulate.

    • +2

Terrible compared to credit card offers

    • +1

Giving real money to buy fake money (points). I’ll keep my dollars thanks.

If the airline goes into admin, that could be the first to go. Don’t foresee that happening to Qantas though.

Just buy Qantas wine and get yourself a better deal.

  • Does this count toward attaining/retaining point club/club plus?

    • +1

      Yes it does.

      • Damn…would have been good 40 days ago

        • +3

As others have said, buying wine through Qantas is a more cost effective method of “buying” points. See Flight Formula for current offers.

As an example, I just got 62584 points the other week @ 1.376c/point, with a bonus dozen bottles of wine thrown in 😉

          • @CamM: Wow which deal was that?!

            • +1

@nightelves: This one was available in a box of 6 with 30K bonus points. I bought two boxes. I’m PC+ so get 10% off. Also had 2 $50 vouchers that I could apply, so basically got 12 bottles of wine with 60K points, plus 3 points per dollar spent. Used my AMEX Qantas Ultimate, so when I add in those points, it actually came down to about 1.35c per point.

              • @CamM: Were you getting the point in your qantas membership immediately or you have to wait few weeks?

          • @CamM: Wow!
But id have to tup the wine down the sink u less its resalable

            • @BargainBogan99: You’re thinking about it the wrong way. You’re buying points that come with bonus wine, not the other way around. If you don’t drink wine, then I’m sure you could gift it to family or friends? You could sell it on eBay or similar. Plenty of options.

  • Far better off buying from Qantas Wine.

    • +2

nah gift card better. I don't drink wine

  • Better off just to sign up with a credit card with spend bonus!

  • borrowing this from OP.

just got confirmed on an economy rtn QF Per~Mel flight for next week. The "request an upgrade" page states I need 54.4K points to go on Business.

Any gurus in the room could shed some light on how best (and the cost) to earn those points need to upgrade in time for next week's flight?

    TQIA!

Only sure fire way to guarantee those points will arrive in time is to purchase them in a deal like this. Points via Qantas Wine might arrive in time, but could take up to a week to hit your account.

Buying 60K points for $1647 will get you a bonus 30K on top. That works out to be 90K points at 1.83c per point.

Best wine offer right now is $474 for wine with a bonus 24K points. So that’s 1.98c per point. Buy 3 of those and you’ll have 72K points for $1422 (but you’ll also have 18 bottles of wine). If you were Point Club Plus, that cost would come down to $1279.80 (or 1.77c per point).

Great post … but why would anyone pay $1647 or $1422 or $1279 just to upgrade to Business on a Perth-Melbourne return ?
        That's bonkers expensive !!

        • +1

I’m with you there. Just answering the question that was asked.

          • @CamM: Yeah, appreciated 🙏

I'm just amazed that the three options are so terrible !!

            • @Nom: There were better options a week or so back for Qantas Wine, but the best options always come from having PC+.

To be honest, buying 150K points with a 75K bonus for $3999 (or 1.77c per point) isn’t horrible value, but I’d rather spend that money and get some wine for that spend.

Credit card sign-on bonuses are better again, but they also come with a credit check and other challenges that not everyone is willing/able to stomach.

Ultimately, everyone’s circumstances will be different and what works for one person may not be feasible for the next.

              • @CamM: Thanks guys! yea, i think the economics unfortunately does not add up :(
i was hoping there was some deals going on EOFY that would help that gap a little more doable.

  • Terrible idea, buy wine or gift cards instead

  • how to buy gift cards to get points?
