I'm wanting to get my electricity meter (and gas if possible) upgraded to smart meters. Origin charges $150+ for the electricity.
Do any providers do this for free and if so is it worth the effort changing to get this done?

If people are coming to manually read the meter and the meters are behind a locked gate so you need to let them in, then yeah it's worth it. Does it mean that your house or solar feed in can be switched off during periods of high demand though?
can you have a solar set up without a smart meter these days? thought it was a default notification to electricity supplier who then and then instruct supplier to convert
The house I'm in now doesn't, but the solar system here is very old, I just asked chatGPT how old the solar system is and it's 4.75 billion years old.
ChatGPT is never wrong!
Not sure if it applies in ACT but in New South Wales you’re forced to go on a demand plan (smart meter) which is much more expensive than a single rate tariff.
Avoid it like the plague and just use their estimation and maybe one day they will do a meter read for a correction.
Again unsure about ACT but in NSW you’re opted in without consent. Doesn’t mean you cannot revert back.
Just need to put in a request to revert to single rate (n71 if serves me correct). Not all providers (I.e small ones) will allow for this but you can port across to a bigger player and they’ll happily oblige
I called up AGL yesterday and they said Because I’m on a smart meter, I’m not able To go to a single rate. Although it is a new house so never had old meter.
It’s definitely permitted. I did it last year.
Must be distributor related. I’m with endeavour
NSW gov site explains it’s possible.@JDMcarfan: For a new house or older house with smart meter upgrade?
I spoke to someone in the resolutions team at AGL yesterday And they said that endeavour used to own analogue meters but now the smart meters are owned by a billing company and single rate tariff not available. The only options is demand or time of use.The below link sounds like its allowed to change?
In some cases, your retailer may not make any changes to your existing plan and tariff rates until your contract term ends. Ask your retailer about the smart meter rates and pricing structures before entering into a new contract. This way you can make sure you are getting the best deal.@JDMcarfan: Out of interest, what company were you with when you switched to single rate?
@Ozbfan: sorry goes against my earlier comments but I was with AGL too and they were able to accept customers migrating on the single rate but wouldn't convert existing (me) from the single rate (demand) to single rate.
Called up red and they were able to port across and then have the smart meter remotely reconfigured to do onto the non-demand plan.
the demand plan is the biggest POS ever. might as well be TOU
Do they do smart gas meters?
Smart electric meters are annoying because you can see every kW you are using and the money flowing out of your pocket. In the old days you didn’t know until the end of the quarter, much less stress…. (/s obviously. Well, mostly)
dont look u̶p̶ at the meter reads every day… :)
Ring and ask ActewAGL ?
