Recommendations for Chest Freezer

Hi all,

Looking for recommendations please for a chest freezer. This will be a secondary unit to the main fridge/freezer in the house.

Budget wise maybe 500 ish but willing to stretch. Hoping for something energy efficient that’ll last but for the right price happy to compromise on these if the product is good.

Thanks!

  • Not sure what a good price is right now, but FYI when I was looking for one the 300L ones were generally around $600. When you're paying $400-500 for a 200L one, it was worth the little bit extra.

Any idea how big you want though? Always a trade off on size vs power consumption.

I've had many years of good service with this chest freezer.

  • Been looking at an inverter freezer lately, has a great power rating.

    • Wouldn't bother with that, personally. Inverters are extra circuitry to go wrong. In the older days with 200w compressors it might have made a difference to have something that could throttle down, but almost everything now has these tiny 60w compressors that just run near constantly and so don't have the efficiency losses of repeated startup cycles.

The garage won’t be heated or cooled. You might want to check the ambient room temperature the freezer is rated for.

Go second hand. Everyone rushed out and got one during covid, and they've been hitting the second hand market recently.

Still not cheaper than a upright freezer though, and the efficiency gains of chest vs upright aren't as big as one would hope.

We purchased the Costco 175ltr chest freezer, it's plenty for an over flow freezer and is fantastic. Sits in our shed but we live in Canberra so it's incredibly underutilised at the moment as it's so blood cold. https://www.costco.com.au/Appliances/Fridges-Freezers/Freeze…

  • Thanks all. Went with a 300L with the 12% Cashrewards at TGG :)

Hey guys, ALDI have a 198L chest freezer coming up for $349. Anyone had good experiences with 'Stirling' brand or better go elsewhere?
