Smart Light with Dumb Switch

Hi there,

I need your advice

I have a smart light - Yeelight Arwen Ceiling Light - that works with a remote and connected to a dumb switch.

I would like to be able to use the dumb switch and the remote to control the light.
As currently when the dumb switch is off, I cannot control the light with the remote.

Would a Sonoff minir4 would do the trick to be able to use the dumb switch and the remote?

Thanks in advance

You could tape over the switch to stop anyone from turning it off, at least.

      👆Done this for another light

      • Got a 3D printer? You could make something like this that fits an Australian wall plate

  • That seems like a lot of wiring work when you could just replace the dumb wall switch with a smart switch.

    • Have considered doing this for when guests come and mess everything up BUT legally, can I do it or do I need to get an electrician in? The inconvenience is not worth the price of a tradie.

      • You can't legally wire the Sonoff unit in either. It's literally wired into the circuit behind the existing light switch. Either way you should be getting an electrician to do it.

    • Would it work with a smart switch?

      • It may need something akin to HomeAssistant to enable the devices to talk to each other but otherwise, yes.

  • Interesting timing, I was just trying to find a basic battery-powered switch for mine. Just replaced garage light with smart bulb, which is great for automation, but sucks when you want to walk into the garage from the house.

For my instance I was thinking a door sensor for when the door opens, just need to find one that doesn't need a hub

The power draw is so low you could simply have the light turn on/off at set times or just leave it on. It may be worth getting a hub and sensor further down the road.

  • So what do I need to use the wall switch and the remote?

    Any smart switch ?
    Or a sonoff ?

    I don’t use HomeAssistant
