  • Just got a new a7iv - is this the best type of card for the camera?

No, it's better to buy SD card, not TF (micro SD) card.

      • How come?

        • SD is capable of having a bigger, faster chip as they're 4 times the size of MicroSD. For instance, the Extreme Pro SD Card is capable of UHS-II speeds (up to 312MB/s), where as the Extreme Pro MicroSD is capable of UHS-I (up to 170MB/s). If you're capturing 4K video at a high framerate, you'll need the extra bandwidth, otherwise it can cause problems with the recording (bottleneck).

You don't need to buy a full size SD card but bear in mind that 'fast' UHS-I cards like this and the Samsung Pro Plus operate almost identically to the cheaper EVO Plus in camera. You won't see any benefit from using a Sandisk Extreme Pro or Samsung PRO Plus card over the EVOs for photos or videos in Sony/Canon full frame cameras.

If you actually want speed then you need to buy V60/V90 UHS-II cards or Type A cards.

Get a V90 normal sized SD card if you plan to shoot video. Prograde are good, Angelbird, believe it or not I’ve had issues with Sony ones. Otherwise you might hit some restrictions using v30. If you only do photos I’d still get a full SD sized card but a V60.
I wouldn’t bother with the Type A cards, they’re super expensive and the only real benefit is transfer speeds to your computer. I can shoot 4k120 on my A7S3 with a V90 card, the only thing i can’t shoot i think was one of the modes in S&Q.

      • V90 cards are so much more expensive, so unless you really need the speed when shooting in very high bitrate of video and burst photos, it's not worth it.

        • You spend $2000-4000 on a camera that has things like 10bit color, slog3, 4k60fps, dual SD card slots. Then skimp on an extra $50-100 on an SD card. Bro is using a full frame Sony A74 not a GoPro, I'm not sure if you had that context in mind when replying.

      • Just something to add for type A - V90 SD cards can be more expensive these days than Type A at higher capacities. 1TB type A cards from Prograde/Angelbird cost about the same as 512GB V90 SD cards would from the likes of SanDisk/Prograde. Sure not everyone needs 1TB/512GB, but if you are on the higher end of the budget for these cards you get much more storage with the Type A cards and they are much faster.

For photos the difference is very noticeable for my own use case as buffer clearing speeds are more than halved vs V90 but this will depend on what you are shooting.

        • That's an interesting point and definitely handy if you're doing sports and wildlife photography. Also a good point about price for GB for higher capacity cards. 800-1000 for 1TB, crazy how much more value they are now (avoided using the word "cheap" which is relative). If I needed 512-1TB I agree, I'd go CF Express Type A, you're getting way better speed.
