RACV No Longer Offer Gift Cards?

I tried to purchase gift cards from RACV for at least a week now, noticed their website continuously displaying the message:
"
eGift cards currently unavailable

Thank you for your interest in eGift Cards. These are currently undergoing site maintenance and are unavailable for purchase.
"

Are they basically removing this functionality? If so, where do you guys recommend getting gift cards for JB and Myer?

can't seem to find any other membership that offer similar convenient gift card purchase options (not since suncrop disabled their gift card buying functionality)

I would think the answer is in your post.

Maybe he can pick you up a course in "Manners" while he's at it.

@asterio: They are fixing the site. When they are done fixing it, it will be back.

When you take your car in for maintenance, do you expect to never see it again?

            • -1

@freefall101: facepalm I don't even know where to start with the amount of stupidity involved in this conversation…

When you take your car in for maintenance and weeks later it is still in maintenance, do you think this is completely normal?

              • @asterio:

When you take your car in for maintenance and weeks later it is still in maintenance, do you think this is completely normal?

You may not have owned a Jeep or Ford Ranger.

                • @CurlCurl: Nope, and lemon cars are not something that I accept as industry standard, neither does the court. Maybe just you thinking its normal.

              • @asterio: You didn't answer the question I asked, instead the one you wanted to answer. That's where the stupidity lies.

If I took my car in for maintenance and weeks later it's still there, I'd first ask the mechanic and not Ozbargain. But again, would you expect to never see it again or just that there's something seriously wrong with the car?

If they were taking down the giftcard portal, they'd just remove it. Simple as that.

                • -1

@freefall101: As an engineer, I can ensure you, if your car is so seriously wrong that it ends up in some maintenance shop for weeks, then you shouldn't even be able to drive it to the maintenance shop in the first place.

And thanks for proving my point … I think I better stop our conversation at this point…

                  • @asterio: What is an engineer?

Engineers apply scientific principles to analyze, design, invent, code, build, and create to solve all sorts of problems and make the world a better place. One of their most important tools is their own creativity.

I can see that, as an engineer, your work isn't to be trusted the first time around.

Looks like Asterio thinks being a computer engineer for IBM also him an Automotive Engineer.

Otherwise, go get a crash course on "site maintenance".

Website maintenance includes tasks like ensuring all the links on your site are working, regularly updating content, and fixing any broken links. It also involves more general housekeeping tasks like backing up your site regularly and monitoring your site's performance.

If the above doesn't fall inline with your definition of manners….take it up with Google.

        • -1

Last time I checked with my IBM employees, "website maintenance" shouldn't take more than a day, let alone few weeks.

Perhaps, you need to go get a crash course on "how to address questions that you don't understand", here is the short answer: "Just don't answer questions that you don't understand"

          • @asterio: The unisuper website was down for a couple of weeks recently, should I have assumed they had taken my super and run?

Also, did you seriously go ask some IBM contractors how long website maintenance should take? That must have been hilarious for them.

            • -2

@freefall101: Given the amount of knowledge you have, it might be hard for you to understand the industry standard that any website going down for "maintenance" work over more than a day is a major problem. Usually the server service provider would need to personally arrange a meeting with the site owner regarding compensation, how do I know? cause I was compensated for exactly this matter and I closely worked with many server service providers for over 20 years.

And yes, I did ask this exact same question to IBM employees, that's the beginning sentence for an email of demand of compensation.

              • @asterio: So how exactly did you conclude that the RACV gift portal is disappearing and not that it's just a major problem with it? That's the question everyone is trying to sink into your big brain.

                • -1

@freefall101: "everyone" who had no idea what site maintenance is… sure… trying to "trying to sink" some idea "into" my engineer / 20 years site owner's "big brain."

Ask anyone who had slightest knowledge in the relevant field, they will tell you if a part of website has been down for weeks (we talking about big company websites, not your homemade school project page), its likely in the process of being removed.

                  • @asterio: I asked my cat, she said "why does it take several weeks to take down a website?".

She's a real thinker, that cat.

what did RACV say when you asked them?

Consult with Australia's bargain hunting community, where hot deals, coupon codes, vouchers, special promotions and freebies are shared everyday.

If they were aware of this place they would definitely have said “ADAGCHS” and possibly “Gift cards save cents. Cheers.”

They haven't replied to any of my emails or messages in the last 6 months, so I don't think anyone is working in their customer benefit department.

      • They haven't replied to any of my emails or messages in the last 6 months, so I don't think anyone is working in their customer benefit department.

Maybe this should have been in your original post.

Sorry if my manners aren't to your liking.

        • enlighten me, how does knowing this makes any difference?

I can't see how the community understanding of "site maintenance" would improve with this message?

  • I just tried it for shits and giggles and I got all the way to the payment page. Must just be you.

I'll do it again with screenshots if you wish.

    • are you sure you are at the RACV eGift cards page? not some other website? (e.g: Woolworth)
I hope you don't find my question offensive as I got few complaints in this post regarding the way I express myself, and I can't see how I can say it any other way.
Before posting this, I actually tried 5 different devices and 3 different internet providers… just saying…

Edit: FFS I was meant to reply

Ahhh gotcha. I don't do gift cards and I've never been to this part of the racv site.

The first time I logged in and went to egift cards section woolies was the first option and worked fine.

A second attempt showed another section with jbhifi cards etc and that says (like yourself)…

    eGift cards currently unavailable
Thank you for your interest in eGift Cards. These are currently undergoing site maintenance and are unavailable for purchase.

    It's not just you.

Thanks for the reminder why I don't do gift cards. FFS what a waste of time to save a few bucks and all the other associated risks with gift cards.

    • I don't usually purchase gift cards in advance, and when I do purchase gift cards, usually I'm purchasing stuff that cost minimum $500 or above (usually my full purchase will be $2000+).

Given the actual purchase of gift cards and receiving them usually takes around 5 ~ 10 mins, so the savings of $50+ makes sense for me.

Well…maybe everyone here earns more than $1000 per hour, which makes sense how everyone would think it's a waste of time, but for me, $50 for work within 30mins is good enough for me.

I couldn't even get cheap movie tickets from their website. Had to get them from shopback

Open a free Macquarie bank account. You'll be buying discounted gift cards within the hour.

I created a support ticket when I tried to grab a Airbnb GC and the RACV portal had the same error a few weeks back.

Their response was "We are sorry that this is still not available at the moment. We are still awaiting an update from our procurement department when the gift cards are back in stock.

We don’t have any definite ETA. I apologize, but rest assured that we are working hard to have them back available real soon."

They responded within a few hours.

    • Just wondering how did you create your support ticket? as in, which part of the website did you use to do that?
Sound like an odd question I know, but they haven't replied to any of my support ticket in 6 months.

      • There was a Contact Us section on the Gift Card area and added my details and issue. I got an instant Jira ticket created through 'New Ideas' and a few hours later got the response from the support member.

It was immediately closed as it's a known 'issue'.

If you are a member of Bupa, You can get some e-giftcards from Bupa life rewards

    • Good point! I didn't even Bupa offered the same e-giftcards benefit!

  • +2

NRMA Blue offer them too, if you can get a free membership

  • Check the gift card wiki to see where else you can get them.

I used to access the RAC (WA) store via my kids little legends account, but then they updated the system and couldn't get to log in properly (despite still saying the kids program gave access) Wasn't really anything I needed on there I couldn't get elsewhere so never bothered finding out why. They canned the kids programs now anyway.

I tried to access their gift card portal 2 weeks ago and had the same maintenance message. Looks like a very long maintenance!

I called up about this and told the woman on the phone it was false advertising and she was really cross and told me it’s not. OF COURSE IT’S FALSE ADVERTISING! They are advertising something for their members that can’t be accessed. I’ve been trying for over two weeks now and I get the same message. They are a MASSIVE company, yet they can’t get the backend of their website fixed.

  • +1

I called the ACCC and reported them. If the site is under maintenance, then it needs to be clear that they DO NOT offer discount cards. A company of this size should not be taking over a month to resolve a site maintenance problem.

And people who keep saying that you can get discount gift cards elsewhere? That’s not the point. The point is that the RACV is misleading its members AND misleading prospective members.

    • I'm just glad to see this forum has a person who had some understanding of "site maintenance" and Australian Consumer Law, unfortunately, the majority if not all of the people on this forum had absolutely no idea of it.

Being a legal professional, I can tell you RACV has indeed breached section 18 of the Australian Consumer Law.
Being an engineer and site owner, I can tell you site maintenance would never take longer than 24 hours, in extremely rare cases, 48 hours. If a website takes months to do "site maintenance", then it's simply a way of pretending a disabled functionality still exist.
My recommendation is indeed report to ACCC so that this can raise their awareness.

I might be the only person on this forum with both a law degree and an engineering degree (both in Masters level) , however, I will probably be downvoted by twenty other smarter people and get my comment hidden just like in the previous posts.
