Blanket/ Doona Recommendations?

Any recommendations for a good blanket/ Doona or types e.g wool/duck down etc?

Any current specials? Are the Aldi ones ok or is it worth paying more?

  • I find with an electric blanket (mattress topper) I can use any blanket even when it's like 10 degrees inside. On medium setting I wake up quite warm when just using a sheet and one of those hospital blankets. On medium it must draw like 70W or whatever, quite reasonable.

      one of those hospital blankets

      A waffle blanket?

      • I guess it is. It's a looser weave than most waffle fabric though.

        • I have bought a few different brands of them and they sound similar to what you describe and were labeled as cotton waffle blankets.

    • How much would that cost per night?

at 40c per kwh, say you sleep for 8 hours with it on medium at 70W, that's 22.4 cents. Let's say on high it draws 110W and you preheat the bed for two hours on high before sleeping, that's an additional 8.8 cents for a grand total of 30.4 cents per night.

Compare that to running the Kogan 2300W oil heater on high for 10 hours in the dead of winter, that would be $9.20.

    • Do you live in a hospital?

Feels like a mental hospital, sometimes.

I recomend that OP do thier own reseach by scanning the specials.each week.

Who are we to do thier work and know exactly what they want?

    • Can confirm, $60 electric "blanket" (more like a sheet underlay) I have hooked up to smart power point. At highest setting (9) it will draw 160-180w total draw (both sides on 9) at a more comfortable setting of 4-5 it will draw up to 80w, with only a single side turned on it will draw half of what has been stated respectively.

Much cheaper to run than my heater, have not had to turn the heater on during the night at all this winter. Only downside is it has a timer to turn off so waking up can be a bit of a cold hit.

      • They still make models with a mechanical control that will stay on indefinitely. If it has a little screen on it then it probably will have a safety timer, if it's an old fashioned like switch you slide up and down it probably will stay on indefinitely. And will work with a smart power adapter, whereas the one with the screen won't turn on by itself.

        • yeah mine has a screen, hit the power button and it will automatically select 9 and 6 hours; no memory of previous settings. Smart power plug was just to confirm it didn't eat my electricity XD.

@A-mak: Oh these things are very power efficient. You're heating your bed and body directly, instead of heating the whole room. You wake up and your body is warm, you are warm, even in a cold room. It's like magic. When I win the lottery then I'll heat the whole room, that will be a nice treat for myself.

Myer have 50% off mini jumbuck (my preference), Downia and a few other brands this weekend.

Just saw a deal posted for $30 off at spotlight who have tontine and a few other brands.

I've always preferred wool, allergies always flair up around duck down.
Remember to go a size above your bed size e.g. double bed, get a queen size quilt. Gives much better coverage.

Was thinking jumbuck but they are like $300+? Are they that much better?

      • +1

Imo yeah - had our jumbucks for prob close to 5-6 years now.

And I mean let’s look at the alternatives:

        Wear more layers - uncomfortable
Turn on heater - power wastage

I guess you could stack blankets too..

Need one of those blankets with a wolf howling at the moon and I’d be all under that…

We picked up one of these 700gsm for each of our beds. Absolutely fantastic for a cold winter, and well priced - particularly when in a 15/20% coupon

    • I managed to get a king 700gsm for like $45. Dunno if it's the rated thickness but with an extra blanket it's been keeping me warm. Meanwhile, I've also spent $300 on a fancy Dyson heater.

    • I got the 1200gsm a few years ago + a 1800gsm mattress topper. I live in a cold area and like my warmth.

i grabbed some olde school pure wool Onkaparinga blankets from a garage sale.

one against/on top of the mattress, one on top of doona.

I'm as snug as a bug in a rug

  • We have an alpha doona and a weighted blanket on top of that. Ducted heater stays on at 15 degrees overnight, probably kicks off a few times no more than 5 I’d say.

Electric blanket would be more economical, but we sometimes get too warm in the middle of the night. May turn heater down to 14 degrees.

    Hope this helps.

  • Just use a hot water bottle with whatever Doona you have. Stays warm until morning
