IGA Roast Chicken $8.99, Lilydale Roast Chicken $10 @ IGA

140

This has been going on for a few weeks now, but seems hasn't been posted yet.

I might be wrong but I had to go back to late 2010s to find a similar price.

Further late night discount at my local ~730-8pm.

Checked two IGAs across Sydney, so assume it's at least Sydney Metro

  • Any ideas why chicken are so cheap recently?

Bird influenza concerns could be driving some prices lower. Farms near contagion areas are likely to lower dispatch costs to attempt to lower exposure if an outbreak occurs on their farm. If you have 250,000 chickens in a farm at the moment, getting them out to market is always a better option (even at a lower price) than having to gas 240,000 chicken and then pay to dump them.

This is the short term effect only of course and likely will drive wholesale prices lower for a short period of time. Demand is likely to drive the price much higher over a period of time if the supply numbers are not there.

Wait! If I could go back to the late 2010s roast chicken prices would be the last thing on my mind.

Poultry farms are selling their chickens before they are tested and found to have bird flu and are forced to euthanise the lot. Seven farms confirmed infected so far and they lost everything.

As the "I" in IGA is Independent - price will likely vary by each IGA group of stores.
So may be different in same city.
And vary by store type - Local Grocer to SuperStore.
    Full price at mine.

Costco's rotisserie chicken is $6.99. You have to be a member or know someone who is willing to help with buying it.

    • Handy for some, but…
Costco for me is 60k return drive💰
Costly & chicken would be cold!
      IGA is a 10 min return walk😉

Understand. My drive is not so bad but coordinating with someone can be a challenge sometimes.

        • Can understand that. Coordinating shopping with others can be difficult.

Costco built 3 stores here - all well outside large Brisbane City limits. Effectively in next cities.
Where land & housing is more affordable. And consumers are likely more price sensitive..

Living near the CBD - never been in a Costco.
Have IGA walk up road, Aldi a bit further, then 2 Woolies, 2 Coles & another Aldi within 2.5k - on (free) express bus.

Shopping for 1, that's easy by bus 5 min walk away & saves on driving costs💰
